The London Rotary Club is pleased to honor senior Ashley Rickens as London High School’s April Student of the Month.
Students of the month are selected by school administrators based on their academic and extracurricular achievement and positive character.
Rickens has a 4.20 grade point average and is ranked 10th in her class. Her favorite class is Advanced Placement language and composition. She is a five-year member of marching band, serving three years as section leader and three years as equipment manager. She is a five-year member of winter guard. She is a three-year member of the National Honors Society and a four-year member of student council, serving as secretary in 2019-20. Additionally, she is a four-year member of the high school youth led prevention group, Teen Leaders of London, serving as events planner the past two years.
When asked to name a school staff person who inspires her, Rickens named Spanish teacher Janelle Wilson.
“Profe Wilson is an inspiration to me because her compassion and love for her students is unmatched. She inspires me to be true to myself and to treat everyone with respect,” she said.
About Rickens, Wilson said, “Ashley is a student I have been privileged to know and teach over the past three years. Apart from having her in Spanish 2 and 4, we also travelled to Costa Rica together with our school group last summer.
“I have witnessed Ashley blossom into the young adult that she is: kind, intelligent, hard-working and she has a great sense of humour. Seeing her interact in Spanish in Costa Rica, it was a delight to see her get outside of her comfort zone and flourish. She will accomplish great things in her life because of her determination and drive.”
After graduation, Rickens will attend the University of Cincinnati to study psychology. She is the daughter of Amy Rickens and Bill Rickens of London.
