Julie Nelson and Joni Sucan of Columbus’ eastside, and James Ackermann of Reynoldsburg admire the artwork by Bob Tavani entitled "Noa on a Park Bench." The work is one of eight paintings done by internationally known and local artists during the "Paint the Land" festivities recently to honor Israel’s 60th anniversary.

Mordechai Rosenstein painted this piece of art, titled "Shalom." The artist said it is not enough to want peace. It must be actively pursued.

The public will have an opportunity to bid on artwork painted by eight internationally and locally known artists.

The artwork, for Israel’s 60th anniversary celebration, is on display in the lobby of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus, located at 1125 College Ave. in Bexley, until the day of the auction, set for 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 17.

Each of the artist’s works is for sale via a silent auction, which have opening bids ranging from $250 to $1,000, depending upon the artist, said Kriss Galloway, manager of marketing and communications at the JCC of Greater Columbus.

Programs and bid slips for the silent auction are located at the JCC’s front desk.

"Proceeds from the auction will be split between the Columbus Jewish Federation and the artists themselves, to cover costs," Galloway said.

Participating artists include internationally known Mordechai Rosenstein, and local artists Susan Couden, Jerry Davidson, Kriss Galloway, Patty Kahn, Yoni Mizrachi, Amy Neiwirth and Bob Tavani.

The Hebrew alphabet is the essence of Rosenstein’s art.

"The flowing forms of the letters have been an inspiration to me since my youth," Rosenstein said in a statement released by the JCC.

Drawing upon the inherent grace and lyrical qualities of the Hebrew alphabet, he embellishes the letters and surrounds them with a design that gives them a special rhythm and excitement, Galloway said.
