On Oct. 6, the public is invited to go painter watching.
From 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the Artists of Madison County will hold a “paint out” on Main Street in London. Members will set up easels anywhere between Center Street and Cowling Park to capture on canvas the subjects of their choice.
“People should feel free to go up to the artists to watch them paint and ask them about their work,” said Alice Kennedy, a member of the Artists of Madison County, which has invited members of the Ohio Plein Air Society to join them for the event.
“There might be five of us, or there could be 30. We don’t know what to expect. It’s very casual,” Kennedy said.
Participants will regroup at 2:30 at the park for an informal critique. Some artists may make their paintings available for purchase.
Paint-outs celebrate the act of painting “en plein air,” a French term for “outdoors.” Plein air painters combine their love of nature with their passion for creating art in the moment and on location.
In keeping with this tradition, the Main Street paint-out will take place rain or shine. Should precipitation fall, Kennedy said the artists will seek shelter, rig up umbrellas, or make other accommodations to allow them to continue painting.
The Main Street paint-out is one in a series of informal outdoor gatherings the Artists of Madison County have held throughout the summer. Members have taken turns picking spots, which have included Madison Lake and the grounds of the Madison County Historical Society Museum.
“It’s a great way to appreciate our community, through our art and our painting,” Kennedy said.
The Artists of Madison County meet the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at different locations. The group, which is diverse in age and experience, gathers to encourage one another in their goals as artists. Activities include workshops, lectures, demonstrations and informal critiques.
