Groveport Senior Center

The Groveport Senior Center, located in the Groveport Recreation Center, 7370 Groveport Road, offers the following:

•Mondays -play bridge at 11:30 a.m. or progressive euchre at 12:30 p.m.

•Tuesdays – double deck pinochle at 12:30 p.m.

•Wednesdays – all – noon: poker, quilting;  5 p.m.: double deck pinochle; fourth Wednesday – 10 a.m. – Super Game Day.

•Thursdays – all – 9:30 a.m. – crafts; 11:45 a.m. – lunch; first Thursday, 10 a.m. – Game Day; 12:30 p.m. – hand & foot; second Thursday – 9 a.m. to noon – county nurse; 12:30 p.m. – business meeting; 1 p.m. – hand & foot; third Thursday, 12:30 p.m. – cash bingo, hand & foot following bingo; fourth Thursday, 12:30 p.m. – euchre, hand & foot.

•Fridays offer bowling at Eastland Lanes at  9 a.m. and poker at 6 p.m.

•Saturdays progressive euchre at 6 p.m.

•Sundays are to just come in and relax.

Heritage Nature Center

The following programs are offered at the Heritage Nature Center at the log house in Heritage Park on Wirt Road in Groveport. Programs are free and open to children of all ages unless otherwise specified. For information call 836-3333.

•May 29 at 7 p.m. – "Coal: Old Plants in our Modern World."  Join Mike Dillman from ODNR Mineral Resource Management for a program on coal mining in Ohio. Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St.

•May 31 at 8:30 p.m. – "S’more Campfire Kids."   Bring your family and join us at our first campfire of the season.  Refreshments included.

Groveport Garden Club

The Groveport Garden Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at Groveport Zion Lutheran Church, 6014 Groveport Road, Groveport. The club welcomes anyone interested in gardening. For information call Virginia Myers, 836-5456.

Photo Forum

Photo Forum is a photography group that meets the first Thursday each month at 7 p.m. at Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St. Learn tips from other photographers, enjoy monthly lectures and photo shoots. Group open to adults and is free. Call Jennifer at (614) 836-3333.  


Looking for performers

Event coordinator Chelle Coleman is now booking singers, dancers, magicians, and others of all ages are being sought to perform for 15 minutes prior to each of the village of Groveport’s outdoor concerts this summer. Non-profit groups seeking to raise funds for their organizations are also being sought to provide concessions during the concerts. For information contact Coleman at (614) 836-3333.

Groveport Farmers Market

Groveport Farmers’ Market begins June 5 and will run every Thursday through August, from 5-7 p.m. in its new location on the front lawn of Groveport Elementary School.

GMHS class of 1978

The Groveport Madison High School class of 1978 will hold its 30 year reunion on July 26 from 6:30 p.m. until midnight at the Berwick Manor. Other graduating classes or former classmates are also welcome. Addresses of 1978 classmates are needed. SE Republicans to meet

The Southeast Franklin County Republican Club will meet May 27 at the Madison Township Community Center at 7 p.m.

GM kindergarten register

If your child will be 5-years-old on or before Aug. 1, 2008, you need to register them for kindergarten now for Groveport Madison’s 2008-09 school year.

Registration will be held at each elementary school office from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Items needed for kindergarten registration are: birth certificate (not a hospital birth record); immunization records; proof of residence – mortgage or lease agreement and two utility bills; current custody papers, court copy, for parent or guardian issues, if applicable; Social Security card or number.

Completed registrations received by May 30 will be entered in a raffle. Ten tickets will be drawn from each school. Prizes are family passes to the Groveport Recreation Center and $25 Kroger gift cards.

Frye to be honored

John Frye of Groveport, who is noted for his work with the Groveport Fighting Fish swim team, will be inducted into the Groveport Hall of Honor, located in the Groveport Recreation Center, on May 28 at 6 p.m.

Voice lessons for kids

A four week series of voice lessons for kids ages 7-15 will be offered June 2 at 7 p.m. at Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St.    Cost is $40 for or $45 for non-residents. Registration and payment is required by May 28. To register call (614) 836-3333.

Handwriting analysis

A handwriting analysis seminar will be offered June 3 at 7 p.m. at Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St. Come find out what your handwriting says about you. Cost is $5. Register at (614) 836-3333.


Kids photography class

A three week series of kids photography classes for ages 9-13 will be offered June 4 at 7 p.m. at Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St.  Cost is $30 for residents and $35 for non-residents. To register (614) 836-3333.

Father’s Day craft

Kids ages 3-12 may come to Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St. on June 7 at 10 a.m. and design a baseball cap for dad or anyone special in their life for Father’s Day.  Event is free. Register at (614) 836-3333.

GMHS athletic awards

•Army Reserve Scholar/Athlete Award goes to one male and one female athlete who excel in the classroom and the playing field: Lauren Tincher and Tyler McDowell.

•State Farm Award:  Meagan Meyer and Kevin Castle.

•Marine Distinguished Athlete Award:  presented to the athlete who has been a distinguished athlete both on and off the field: Andrea Murray and Chonsy Boulay.

•Agonis Club:  recognizing the "best of the best": Kathryn Kennedy and Joey Gesick.

•Archie Griffin Award: to promote sportsmanship, ethics and integrity among high school students: Princess Albertini and Bryan Rosales.    

•Dispatch Scholar/Athletes: recognizes outstanding achievements in scholastics, athletics and citizenship: Meagan Meyer  and Kevin Castle.

•OHSAA Scholar Athlete Award: the recipient must have a min 3.25 GPA and three varsity letters in one sport or four varsity letters in two sports: Meagan Meyer.                                   

•OHSAA Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Ethnic Minority Award:  Chonsy Boulay.

•OHSAA State Award:  exemplifies good sportsmanship, is a positive role model, and reflects a high level of ethics and integrity in dealing with students and the interscholastic athletic program: Cindy Nuckles.

•Ernie Godfrey Award:  presented to the top scholar-athlete in the greater Columbus area: Kevin Castle.

•Mac Sims Award:  outstanding male athlete in the senior class: Kevin Castle.

•Lucinda Doersam Award:  honors the outstanding female athlete in the senior class: Andrea Murray.

McDowell a Muskie

Former Groveport Madison High School football offensive lineman Tyler McDowell will play for Muskingum College starting this fall. McDowell was a two year letterman and Ohio Capital Conference scholar athlete while at Groveport Madison.

Tennis block party

May is National Tennis Month and to encourage people of all ages to pick up a racquet, the U.S. Tennis Association is serving up "Tennis Block Parties" with the help of community tennis organizations.

In Groveport, the Tennis Block Party will be held at the Groveport Madison High School tennis courts on May 29 from 3-7 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public and will consist of tennis, interactive games and attractions, and the opportunity to learn and enjoy the benefits of the game.  The event will also debut the USTA’s innovative new play format called QuickStart Tennis which was created to help children, ages 10 and under, find success learning tennis from the first swing.


Music in the Park

The village of Groveport will hold its free annual "Music in the Park" summer concert series at 7 p.m. in Heritage Park on Wirt Road on the following dates (rain location: Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St.):

•June 22 – Paint It Black (Rolling Stones tribute band)

•July 13 – JuJu Bees (R&B, Motown)

•July 27 – Challengers (country, oldies, originals)

Movies in the park

The village of Groveport will present free summer movies in Heritage Park on Wirt Road at 7 p.m. every Saturday beginning June 21 with "Shrek the Third" and June 28 with "Bee Movie." For information call (614) 836-3333.

Groveport Nature Fair

Groveport’s annual nature fair will be held June 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Heritage Park on Wirt Road. The event includes crafts, shows, demonstrations, exhibits, music, a petting zoo, and a hayrides.

GMHS valedictorians

The Groveport Madison High School class of 2008 valedictorians are: Quinton Jones, Kathryn Kennedy, Megan Meyer, Tyler McDowell, Azia Mason, Caitlin Martin, and Mary Bui.


Art in the Park Night

A free "Art in the Park Night" for kids ages 3-12 will be held in June 9 at 7 p.m. at Groveport’s Heritage Park shelter house, 551 Wirt Road. Learn how to make cool tye-dye and snowflake designs onto linen cloth. To register call (614) 836-3333.

 

Astronomy Night

An "Astronomy Night" will be held June 13, at 9 p.m. at the Groveport Log House parking lot, 551 Wirt Road. Bring your telescope or binoculars and to view the night sky. An Ohio State University astronomer will point out attractions in the night sky and participants can view through a high powered telescope. For information call (614) 836-3333.

   

Art camp

A children’s summer art camp for ages 6-11 will be offered June 23-27, at the new Crooked Alley KidSpace, located at Oak Street and Wirt Road in Groveport. This camp is sponosored by the village of Groveport and a grant from GCAC.  Cost is $50 per child. Register by June 16. Call Jennifer at (614) 836-3333.

 
Healthy cooking

A healthy cooking class will be offered June 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St. Register by June 5 at (614) 836-3333.

GMHS class of ’68 reunion
