Groveport Senior Center

The Groveport Senior Center, located in the Groveport Recreation Center, 7370 Groveport Road, offers the following:

•Mondays -play bridge at 11:30 a.m. or progressive euchre at 12:30 p.m.

•Tuesdays – double deck pinochle at 12:30 p.m.

•Wednesdays – all – noon: poker, quilting;  5 p.m.: double deck pinochle; fourth Wednesday – 10 a.m. – Super Game Day.

•Thursdays – all – 9:30 a.m. – crafts; 11:45 a.m. – lunch; first Thursday, 10 a.m. – Game Day; 12:30 p.m. – hand & foot; second Thursday – 9 a.m. to noon – county nurse; 12:30 p.m. – business meeting; 1 p.m. – hand & foot; third Thursday, 12:30 p.m. – cash bingo, hand & foot following bingo; fourth Thursday, 12:30 p.m. – euchre, hand & foot.

•Fridays offer bowling at Eastland Lanes at  9 a.m. and poker at 6 p.m.

•Saturdays progressive euchre at 6 p.m.

•Sundays are to just come in and relax.

Heritage Nature Center

The following programs are offered at the Heritage Nature Center at the log house in Heritage Park on Wirt Road in Groveport. Programs are free and open to children of all ages unless otherwise specified. For information call 836-3333.

•April 17, 7 p.m. – "National Park Week." Come for a stroll around Heritage Park, learn its history and help keep it clean.

•April 19, 10 a.m. – "Earth Day is Every Day." Hands-on Earth Day activities as well as stories, crafts, and helping a local project.

•April 24, 7 p.m. – "Arbor Day." Learn all about trees and their importance. Get a tree to take home.

•April 26, 10 a.m. – "Wet N’ Wild." Kids of all ages will enjoy a variety of activities about the wild ways of wetlands. Take a walk and search for animals that a rely on this important habitat.

•April 29, 7 p.m. – "Hummingbird Haven." Find out how to attract hummingbirds to your feeders and create a backyard haven for them.

Groveport Garden Club

The Groveport Garden Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at Groveport Zion Lutheran Church, 6014 Groveport Road, Groveport. The club welcomes anyone interested in gardening. For information call Virginia Myers, 836-5456.

New children’s book

Photo Forum

Photo Forum is a newly formed photography group that meets the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St.  This group is for anyone who has an interest or passion for taking photos. Learn tips from other photographers, enjoy monthly lectures and photo shoots. Group open to adults and is free. Call Jennifer at (614) 836-3333.  

GMHS alumni banquet

The 2007-08 Groveport Madison High School Alumni Committee has been meeting and planning the 115th Alumni Banquet to be held May 17 at the high school at 5 p.m. Reservations letters are being prepared. Set aside that date for a great time of renewing friendships. The classes of 1958 and 1983 will be honored.  


Glendening spring carnival

Glendening PTO will hold their annual "Spring Carnival" at Glendening Elementary on May 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be food, games and prizes.


History docents sought

The Groveport Heritage and Preservation Society (GHPS) is seeking docents to serve as a tour/field trip guides for tours of Groveport that may be offered to various groups.  No experience is necessary, just a desire to share stories and traditions in order to keep Groveport’s heritage alive.

The program consists of a log house/one room school experience, a cemetery tour with gravestone studies and rubbings, and a walking tour of the downtown and canal areas. You can be trained in one area or you can volunteer to do all three. One hour training sessions will be held:

•Apr. 27 at 3 p.m. and May 1 at 7 p.m. for the Log House program. Meet at the log house in Heritage Park.        

•Apr. 27 at 4:30 p.m. and May 1 at 6 p.m. for the cemetery program. Meet at the shelter house by the log house in Heritage Park.

•May 3 at 10 a.m. for the walking tour. Meet at Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St.

Learn Feng Shui

Estate planning and elder law issues will be explaned by attorney John Mashburn on April 23 at 7 p.m. at Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St.  This seminar is free. Register at 836-3333.

Zoo at Zion

Looking for performers

Event coordinator Chelle Coleman is now booking singers, dancers, magicians, and others of all ages are being sought to perform for 15 minutes prior to each of the village of Groveport’s outdoor concerts this summer. Non-profit groups seeking to raise funds for their organizations are also being sought to provide concessions during the concerts. For information contact Coleman at (614) 836-3333.

"An Evening of Jazz"

The Groveport Madison High School Band Boosters will host their third annual "An Evening of Jazz" and silent auction on April 25, 2008 from 7-9 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 4760 Winchester Pike, Columbus.   The GMHS Freshman Jazz Band, the GMHS Jazz Band and the GMHS Jazz Ensemble will perform. Groveport Arts Festival

The Groveport Arts Festival will be held May 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. along the treelined streets of historic downtown Groveport. The festival is a juried event that will highlight fine art and fine craft exhibitors from all over Ohio. Kim Pensyl and the Smooth Jazz Trio will perform from 3-5 p.m. The festival will also feature a wine garden and a kids’ area. For  information go to groveportsartsfestival.org.  

Human needs summit

The next meeting for the Groveport Human Needs Summit is April 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Groveport Madison Schools administration offices, 5940 Clyde Moore Drive in Groveport. Guest speaker will be Brenda Hauser from Broad Street Presbyterian Church and COMPASS (Church Outreach Ministries Program of Social Service & Assistance).


Flag retirement ceremony

Boy Scout Troop 71 in Groveport and the Groveport Parks and Recreation Department will hold a flag retirement ceremony on May 4 at 4:30 p.m. in Groveport Park, 7370 Groveport Road. The public is invited to bring any flag of the United States that needs to be properly retired. You may also drop off a flag to be retired at the Groveport Recreation Center. Freewalt to speak

Jerry Freewalt, social concerns director for the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, will speak at Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, 5225 Refugee Road, Columbus, on April 22 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. For information call Carolyn at  (614) 206-4855.


Spring Tea

The Groveport Presbyterian Women’s Association will host a "Spring Tea" on May 4 from 2-4 p.m. at the Madison Township Community Center, 4575 Madison Lane, Groveport. The theme will be a "Mad Hatter" tea party. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for students, with children free.
