CW hydrant flushing

Canal Winchester’s water department staff flushes fire hydrants twice each year to allow water to enhance water quality by flushing sediment from mainline pipes, to verifiy proper operation of hydrants and valves, and maintain firefighting capabilities. Hydrants will be flushed between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, from Sept. 1-30.

If you see a hydrant being flushed on your street, avoid running tap water, your washing machine or your dishwasher until flushing in your area is complete.

During or immediately after hydrant flushing, tap water may come out with sediment that causes discoloration. Although a slight discoloration may last for a few hours, it does not affect the taste or quality of the water. This discoloration only affects the appearance of the water and poses no health threat.

If you encounter discolored water, shut your water off and wait several minutes. After waiting, check the clarity by running cold water for a few minutes to allow new water to flow into your pipes. If the water is still discolored, wait a few minutes and check again. In some cases, it may be a few hours before the water is completely clear.

Avoid washing laundry during scheduled flushing hours. After hydrants in your area have been flushed, wait until water runs clear from your tap, then begin with a load of dark laundry before doing lights or whites.  If water pressure or volume seems low, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.

For information contact Canal Winchester’s Water Department at 614-837-5623.

CW Football for Food

The annual Canal Winchester Football For Food program will be held Sept. 12 when the Canal Winchester Indians take on the Teays Valley Vikings at Canal Winchester High School. The Canal Winchester Food Pantry has secured local sponsors to purchase the gate receipts for the game, including Nifco, Madison Township, Waste Management, Canal Banking Center, Wal-Mart and the Village of Canal Winchester. No admission will be charged to attend the game. Instead, the public is asked to bring non-perishable food and household items which will be donated to the Canal Winchester Food Pantry.

Also, Canal Winchester Human Services will sponsor the third annual Pizza for Food drive. Indian Trail, Winchester Trail or the Canal Winchester Middle School students are encouraged to bring food items to school from Sept. 8-12.

In 2006 and 2007, more than 30,000 individual meals were distributed to local families in need. It is anticipated the 2008 statistics will surpass those numbers.  While the Pantry works in cooperation with the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, the generosity of the Canal Winchester community is vital in making sure it is able to serve all the needs and demands of those in need. Tax deductible financial contributions are also welcomed and can be mailed to:  Canal Winchester Food Pantry, 80 W. Columbus St., Canal Winchester, OH 43110. For information contact the Canal Winchester Food Pantry at 470-2574.
