CW Sertoma meets

Canal Winchester Sertoma Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at Donatos Pizza, 6310 Prentiss School Drive, Canal Winchester. Sertoma’s main sponsorship focus is speech and hearing. Sertoma exists for the noble purpose of "Service to Mankind" by communication of thoughts, ideas and concepts to accelerate human progress in health, education, freedom and democracy. At Wagnalls Memorial

The following activities will be held at The Wagnalls Memorial Foundation, 150 E. Columbus St., Lithopolis (for information visit www.wagnalls.org):

•Belly Dancing Exercise Class Mondays 10-11:30 a.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. $7 each class.

•Art Classes with Teresa Satola, $10 per class or paid monthly.   For information, or to register for either class, call 837-4765, ext 127. Adult class is 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Juvenile class (ages 8-13) is 4-6 p.m. on Wednesdays.

•The Owl’s Nest Book Store, located on the first floor of the Wagnalls Library.  

•Children’s Summer Reading Programs sign ups for ages 3-12 from June 23-28.

•Computer classes June 10 & 17. Cost $30. Computer classes June 12 & 19. Cost is $30.

CW’s Farmer’s Market

Main Street Canal Winchester will sponsor a Farmer’s Market each Saturday through Oct. 18 in historic downtown Canal Winchester from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vendors will offer fresh produce, flowers, hand made crafts, candy, cookies, and more. Vendors interested in participating may register on-line at the MainStreetCanalWinchester.org web site or call Gaynell Garrett, Market Coordinator at (614) 833-5787.  

Music & Art in the Park

Canal Winchester’s "Music and Art in the Park" free concert series will be held the third Friday of every month, May through August, from 6-9 p.m. at Stradley Park, just north of the village municipal building at 36 S. High St. Additional activities will include face painting by the Canal Winchester Art Guild, a roaming magician, a caricature artist, and art displays by the Canal Winchester Art Guild.

This year’s schedule includes:

•"Blast From the Past," June 20, featuring Swing’s The Thing, a 16-piece big band ensemble from 7-9 p.m. and a classic car show from 6-9 p.m.  Other activities include children and adult hula hoop contests and art displays by the Canal Winchester Art Guild. Anyone who is interested in displaying their car at the classic car cruise-in should contact Carrie Hoover at choover@canalwinchesterohio.gov or (614) 834-9727. Provide the make, model and year of your car as well as your name and city of residency.

•"A Touch of Country," July 18 with the Christy Angeletti Band from 6-9 p.m. as well as line dance instruction from 6-7 p.m.  As part of this theme, area residents and businesses will have the opportunity to set up tables with pre-approved products to sell, such as produce, or items to display, such as arts and crafts.

•"Island Rhythms on the Canal" will be held Aug. 15 with Spirit of the Pacific Island hula dancers from 6-7 p.m. and the Tropics Island Quartet from 7-9 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating at this family-friendly event. Food and drink is available for purchase through event concessionaire Roman’s Pizza. Picnics are also welcome; however, alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Canal Winchester’s community center, located at 22 S. Trine Street, will be used as a backup location in the case of inclement weather for all concerts except the June 20 "Blast From the Past" event.

Charity golf scramble

The Canal Winchester Sertoma will hold its annual charity golf scramble on June 21at Homestead Springs Golf course. Registration begins at 11 a.m.. Shotgun start. Tee off at noon. Entry fee is $60 per player ($240 per team). Entries need to be received by June 14. Checks should be made payable to Canal Winchester Sertoma Club, 7306 Crossett Ct., Canal Winchester, OH 43110. Chicken BBQ

Faith United Methodist Church, 15 W. Columbus St., Canal Winchester, will host its 51st annual "Chicken BBQ" on June 14 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Proceeds support Faith’s Mission Team in outreach ministries in the Canal Winchester school district. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. For tickets call 837-2343.


Stone City 5K

The fifth annual Stone City 5K will take place June 21 at Wagnalls Memorial, 150 E. Columbus St., Lithopolis.  Registration starts at 8 a.m.  Early registration fee is $20/adult; $15/seniors and children; $50/family; $15 per person for registered groups of 10 or more.  Late/onsite registration (June 21) fees are increased.

CW golf scramble

The fourth annual Canal Winchester Area Historical Society (CWAHS) scramble golf outing will be held June 13, at the Pine  Hill Golf Club, 4382 Kauffman Road in Carroll. Cost is $60 per golfer. The event will feature a putting  contest, raffle prizes, mulligans, a double your money hole, closest  to the pin, longest drive contest and a$10,000 "hole in one prize." Registration begins at 8 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.  For information or to make a donation of a raffle prize or as a hole sponsor, contact Mike Ippoliti at (614) 837-8400  or the society at (614) 833-1846.  Mail reservations to CWAHS, P.O. CWACC golf outing

The Canal Winchester Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual golf outing on July 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at  Pine Hill Golf Course, 4382 Kauffman Road, Carroll. Registration at 7:30 a.m. with shotgun start at 9 a.m. Cost is $65 per golfer and $260 per team. After July 4 cost is $80 per golfer and $320 per team. Main St. Canal Winchester awarded $25,000 grant

Main Street Canal Winchester was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from Heritage Ohio. This matches the $25,000 already collected from local businesses and residents dedicated to restoring the historic Scioto Valley interurban depot.  Jeff Siegler, director of revitalization at Heritage Ohio, officially recognized Canal Winchester as the recipient of this award at Canal Winchester Village Council’s June 2 meeting.

The Canal Winchester Garden Club will hold its annual picnic at the home of Thea Coons in Pickerington. For information call Thea at 837-6513.

CW bridge to close

Franklin County Engineer Dean Ringle announced that replacement of the Canal Winchester South Road (Washington Street) bridge, spanning a tributary of Little Walnut Creek just south of Ashbrook Village Drive, will require the road to be closed to all traffic from June 9 to late August.

"We’ll be replacing the bridge with a new concrete arch structure," said Ringle in a June 2 press release. "It is our goal to re-open the roadway as soon as possible."

The posted detour route for north bound motorists will follow Lithopolis Road west to Gender Road, north to Groveport Road, and east to Washington Street. South bound traffic will the detour in the opposite direction.

The project will cost $329,000 and the work will be performed by Shelly & Sands, Inc. Funding is provided by Franklin County from motor vehicle registration fees and gasoline taxes.

Correction

In the article "CW modulars have a new purpose," by Linda Dillman and published in the June 2 edition of the Southeast Messenger, it was incorrectly reported that the Faith Educare director is Kim Badger. Her correct name is Karen Badger. Also, the article neglected to mention Faith Educare’s new facility will serve grades K-5. The Messenger regrets the errors.


CW cross country meeting

Boys and girls in the Canal Winchester School District who like to run are encouraged to attend a cross country meeting for runners and their parents on June 24 at 7 p.m. at the Canal Winchester High School stadium. Students who will be entering grades 5-12 are welcome to attend.  Conditioning will follow the brief meeting. Conditioning will occur on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-8 p.m. usually at the high school track and on Saturday mornings at the nearby Metro Parks.  Call Coach John Bender at 833-4230 for information.

"Marblehead Light"

Join local Artist, Patty Sykes, a certified Robert Warren Instructor at Gender Road Christian Church on July 26 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. as she guides you to paint "Marblehead Light" on canvas in oils.  Cost is $60.
