On June 12, hundreds of families throughout the county traveled to Westgate Park to attend the second annual Westside Community Summer Bash. Hosted by the local non-profit A Step in the Right Direction and sponsored by CareSource, the event offered children of all ages a day of fun and entertainment while also providing adults with links to health care and legal aid services they may need to access now or in the future. Taking advantage of the free haircuts provided by stylists Tonia Villa and Alex McKeown (not pictured) is Michael Conner, 10, who desired a close trim to make his growing mohawk a little more pronounced.
Nevaeh Parsons, 17, and Serenity East, 12, showcased their love of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with these temporary face paintings from artist Kiara Booker.

Kaiden Davis (pictured at right), celebrates as he finishes the inflatable obstacle course ahead of Xavier Johnson. Davis, 7, is the son of event coordinator and A Step in the Right Direction founder Kayla Davis. A native of the westside, Davis said she founded both the non-profit and the community festival as a way to give back to the residents of the region. The mission of the non-profit is to help assist the unhoused and restored citizens with re-entry into the community through programs and resources.
Food preparation volunteer Maddie Jo Parsons had quite a busy day putting the grilled hotdogs in buns for the community. Grill master Tina Graves said she lost count of how many hotdogs they served throughout the course of the four-hour event.
