Missy Keifer is passionate about helping animals in need. This is one reason she started the Grove City rescue organization A Purrfect Start.

A few weeks ago, the rescue group agreed to help a woman find new homes for her cats. The problem is that there were more than 70 cats.

Keifer said the woman had good intentions and just wanted to help homeless and unwanted cats. However, she failed to get the cats spayed or neutered and the population problem quickly grew out of control.

Keifer said A Purrfect Start took five mother cats, 16 kittens and helped to spay or neuter 40 felines. Pet FBI chipped in to cover the cost of the spaying and neutering. Volunteers are reaching out to other rescue organizations to help house the cats until they find permanent homes.

“We are at our max,” said Keifer.

A Purrfect Start is a small, foster-based rescue group. Keifer started the non-profit organization in 2008 after helping to rescue 40 cats from a local hotel.

“There was a need so I just started my own rescue,” said Keifer.

Now, Keifer’s rescue group has to find good, loving homes for many cats.

In addition to spaying and neutering, the cats have been tested for illness and vaccinated.

“Overall, the cats are healthy,” said Keifer. “They seem to be friendly.”

A Purrfect Start will host an adoption drive from 1 to 4 p.m., May 25 at the Petco, located at 2132 Stringtown Road in Grove City.

Keifer said instead of an adoption fee, the group would simply ask for a donation since there are so many cats that need a new home. Those interested in adopting a cat must fill out an application.

For those who are interested in adopting a cat, but cannot attend the adoption drive, visit the organization’s website at www.apurrfectstart.org. There, you can browse photos of the cats, download an application or make a monetary donation.
