While the E.L. Evans Senior Center has been closed for months to slow the spread of a novel coronavirus, its parking lot became quite the happening place on July 29. For approximately an hour, a plethora of cars passed through in order to pick up some good, old-fashioned cookout food prepared by professional chefs at LifeCare Alliance. Leah Bunck, the organization’s assistant director of nutrition programs, said they have been hosting drive-thru cookouts at senior centers and senior living complexes throughout Columbus for months but have recently made their way to Grove City. They plan to host another cookout drive-thru on Aug. 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and hold another one every two weeks. She said interested parties should check their Facebook page for additional dates and information, as well as the city of Grove City’s Facebook page.
Chef Maurice Nowlin tends to the hotdogs at the drive-thru cookout. He said the secret to grilling the perfect hotdog is “to not walk away from it unless you like it charred.”
Chef Mitchell Henderson wraps the hotdogs for the warm meal portion of the drive-thru. Henderson, a chef at Carrie’s Café, will soon be busy preparing more meals as the popular dining center opens a drive thru for seniors beginning Aug. 3 at the organization’s main building, located at 670 Harmon Ave. The times for those drive-thru eateries are 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information, contact Leah Bunck at lbunck@lifecarealliance.org.
Grove City resident Sandy Reddig gives a thumbs up as she prepares to drive away. She said she was picking up meals for several seniors who did not feel comfortable venturing out.
Members of the chair volleyball team at the Evans Center used the drive-thru event to hold a socially distanced picnic. From left to right, they are Agnes Klinko, Millie McKitrick, Chris Sword, Freda Barclay and Phil Smith.
Sheila Wissman, an employee with the city’s parks and recreation department, helps place fruit and chips inside the cool meal to-go bag.
