More playground equipment is going in at Merri Mac Park in London.

Penchura LLC, a playground equipment supplier out of Brighton, Mich., delivered the new equipment and completed site preparation just before Christmas. Concrete work and equipment installation is scheduled to be completed this week, according to Landon McKenzie, London’s parks and recreation manager.

Last year, London landed a neighborhood revitalization grant through the Ohio Department of Development’s Community Development Block Grant program. The majority of the money is earmarked for drainage improvements in the city’s Ward 3 area. A portion also was set aside for the new playground amenities.

The site for the new equipment, designed for children ages 3 to 6 years old, sits adjacent to existing playground equipment designed for older children. The existing equipment was installed and dedicated in the fall of 2022. A combination of donations and city funding covered the project cost. The donations were raised by Merri Mac Park Miracle, a non-profit group dedicated to raising funds for improvements at the park.

The city has contracted with Penchura for all of its playground installations over the past several years, including the equipment at Cowling Park.

As for what’s on the agenda for Merri Mac Park in 2024, McKenzie said crews will continue to rehabilitate the park’s two softball fields to get them user-ready.

“We plan to bring slowpitch softball back for adults,” he said.

Merri Mac Park Miracle’s next fundraiser is the London Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5K, set for April 20. Now in its fourth year, the race starts and finishes at the park. For more information, visit LondonOhMarathon on Facebook. To sign up, visit https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/LondonOhioMarathon.

Additionally, donations can be sent anytime to “Merri Mac Park Miracle,” P.O. Box 674, London, OH 43140. For more information about the group, visit them on Facebook or email merrimacparkmiracle@yahoo.com.
