3 wrestlers place at state

Zach Nelson of Madison-Plains made his fourth trip to the state wrestling tournament and claimed second place in the Division III 145-pound class. The tournament was held at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus Feb. 28-March 1. Nelson took three wins, including an 11-2 semi-final victory over Curt Levy of West Liberty- Salem shown here.

(Above left) West Jefferson senior and two-time state placer, Jimmy Householder, entered the 2008 state wrestling tournament eager to face the best in the state. He did just that when he wrestled sophomore Logan Stieber of Monroeville in the final round for the Division III 119-pound class title. Householder entered this year’s tourney with a record of 53-1, and Stieber at 47-0. Stieber came out the victor, leaving Householder in second place. (Above right) West Jefferson senior Vince Gualtieri took third place among the Division III 130-pounders at state. Gualtieri won four of his five matches in his second appearance at state, including an 8-4 final round victory over Blake Thoreson of Burton Berkshire. In addition to Householder, Gualtieri was joined on the state mats by his brother Marco (125-pound sophomore) and Sean Prather (135-pound junior).

West Jefferson freshman Sean Prather claimed his first state wrestling tournament win in front of the Schottenstein Center crowd with a 5-3 overtime victory over Josh Reindel of Oregon Cardinal Stritch. The two wrestlers faced off in the Division III 135-pound class on the first night of the three-day event held Feb. 28- March 1.
