The following are highlights from the Madison-Plains school board meeting held May 20:

Graduation—Ninety-one students are set to get their diplomas during commencement ceremonies set for May 30.

Lunch prices—The board approved an increase in lunch prices for the 2014-15 school year. Lunches for kindergarten through sixth grade are going from $2.25 to $2.50. Lunches for grades seven through 12 are going from $2.50 to $2.75.

HVAC bids—Due to the omission of a bid bond as required by state law, the board rejected all bids submitted on April 28 for heating and cooling upgrades. The district will redo the process. Even with the delay, the upgrades should be completed over the summer, said Superintendent Bernie Hall.

Band director resigns—Derek Scoles submitted his resignation. He has served as band director for eight years. Board member Ken Morlock praised Scoles for increasing the band’s size and quality of performance. Board member Bob Butz commented, “I hat to see Mr. Scoles go. He is well liked by the kids.”

Donations—The board accepted an $8,400 donation for athletics from Stan Hanson on behalf of the Plain Class of 1961. They also accepted a $2,217 donation from the Scholastic Boosters for the civics/English class Washington D.C. trip.

Next meeting— The board usually meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month. For June, that schedule has changed. Instead, the board will meet at 7 p.m. June 10.
