On the southwest corner of the Madison County courthouse lawn, 408 blue and silver pinwheels spin in the wind.

The pinwheels represent the number of child abuse reports made to Madison County Children Services in 2013.

To promote child abuse prevention, the Madison County Department of Job and Family Services invites the community to participate in a Child Abuse Prevention Carnival on April 25. The free, family-friendly event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at the London Community Center (the old primary building), 60 S. Walnut St.

The evening will include games, door prizes, face painting, crafts, balloon animals, a photo booth, an obstacle course and a parachute. COSI will set up five interactive science spot kiosks. Food will include hot dogs, chips, drinks, popcorn, cookies and candy. Vendors also will be on site.

“The carnival will be a way to engage the community and promote child safety and strengthen families,” said Julie Harris, a licensed social worker and coordinator of Madison County’s awareness campaign.

Event donors include: Ann & Tony’s, Auto Zone, Ballrich Chips, Boyd’s Garage Doors, BST, Columbus Clippers, COSI, Coughlin Automotive, CVS, Der Dutchman, Direct Mechanical, Donatos, Dwyer Bros.
