“Building a better community…one step at a time.
Thats the theme of the 2nd annual walk-a-thon to benefit the Mount Sterling Community Center. The event is set for 9 a.m. Oct. 13. The center is located at 164 E. Main St.
“Last year, we had 45 walkers and raised over $10,000. We were really thrilled with that. This year, we hope to double that amount, said Annie Tomlinson, center director.
Participants are asked to collect pledges prior to the event. Each person who raises at least $200 will receive a walk-a-thon t-shirt. Walkers can collect the money and submit it, or donors can send their donations in by mail. Pledge forms are available at the center or as a downloadable PDF at www.mountsterlingcc.org. All donations to the walk are tax-deductible.
The route is roughly two miles in length. The event will take place rain or shine. Participants who prefer to stay dry can walk in the centers gym. Anyone who cannot make it out on Oct. 13 is encouraged to walk on their own before the walk-a-thon. Pledge forms and any collected money can be dropped off or mailed in to the center before, during, or the week after the walk.
Proceeds go toward the operation of the center, from utility bills to program expenses.
“We continue to operate primarily on donations from individuals, companies, organizations and churches, Tomlinson said.
The centers mission isto provide opportunities for the people of Mount Sterling and the surrounding region to enrich their quality of life. Some of those opportunities include a food pantry, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, GED classes, adult counseling, after-school homework and tutoring programs, day camps, Bible studies, aerobics classes, sewing classes, church services and open gym basketball and volleyball sessions.
