When Eileen Elswick, a teacher at Hayes Intermediate School, told her students that her father, Justin Schlesinger, was battling a debilitating disease known as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) last year, the school rallied around her and helped raise $730 for the Central Ohio ALS Chapter. To honor his memory when he passed, the students participated in a mini-walk at the school to further the cause of raising awareness. This year, their mission to fight ALS continued. On Sept. 27, students participated in another mini-walk and discovered that they had raised $810 for the local ALS Chapter. Shown walking to defeat ALS are sixth grade students Addison Hutchings (left) and Sydney Stoll. Hutchings is the granddaughter of Justin Schlesinger.
