South Charlestons village commissioners have increased their support of the local swimming pool.
Last year, they paid for the water to clean and initially fill the pool. This year, they also are paying for water for the entire swim season. Shawn Jackson of the Community Recreation Commission, the non-profit organization that runs the pool, appreciates the support.
“It probably will save us roughly $1,000. That really helps, he said.
The CRCs annual budget is $38,000. Lifeguard wages account for a large part of the pools operating costs. Other expenses include utilities, insurance and water.
“By the end of the season, were lucky to have $800 left to carry over to the next year, Jackson said. Hes happy to be in the black, though, considering the pool was in the red by thousands of dollars just a few years ago.
“The community is really good about helping us out, he said.
Organizers goals include launching a long-range capital campaign to raise money to replace the pool. The effort will include application for grants.
The CRC board is made up of volun-teers. In addition to Jackson, they are Jackie Grey, Sandy Harbour, Tracy Lau and Wendy Russell. Harbour and Jen Routzahn volunteer their time as pool managers.
