New cruiser for SCPD
The South Charleston Police Department will take delivery of a new police cruiser soon. The 2010 Dodge Charger will replace a 2002 Chevy Impala with high mileage. The department also has a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria that has been updated with a department decal. The new Charger will arrive with identical color and design to match the Ford, all part of the package deal made with the dealership where it was purchased. Police Chief Derek Smith said the new vehicle was purchased for a state bid price, offering the village the best possible value.
American Legion car show set for Aug. 21
American Legion Post 176 will host its 17th annual Cruzin the Park car show from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 at South Charleston Community Park. There are no entry fees. Door prizes, music by DJ Dick Ryman, a 50/50 raffle, and a pork chop dinner are planned.
All proceeds go the the Legions scholarship fund. All students who applied last year received scholarship awards. Applications are made available each year through Southeastern High School counselor, Rick Woods.
Heritage Commission schedules open house
The South Charleston Heritage Commission will open its historic train depot and log house from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 8. They open annually for public tours but are considering a second open house in December. The commission also welcomes visitors and tours by appointment. Ice cream social set
South Charleston United Methodist Church at the corner of Church and Jamestown streets will hold an ice cream social from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 14. The Social will feature sandwiches, chips and drinks, along with ice cream and homemade pies. Call (937) 462-8043.
