WAC election results & updates
The Westland Area Commission (WAC) is looking into possibilities for the annual Independence Day festivities, July 2. Independence Day activities are sponsored by the Westland Area Business Association. This year’s theme is “Reflect, Renew, Restore, Strengthening our Westland Community.” This year’s post-parade activities will be held at Westland High School, rather than the Lincoln Village Plaza Shopping Center parking lot. At the May 18 meeting, commission president Linda Pitts said they could enter the parade and have a booth at the post-parade event, both for $10, the rate charged for non-profit organizations. Pitts said, she and commissioner Melissa Barth-Kelly would meet to discuss what information could be prepared and handed out at those events. A report on what will be done will be presented at the June 15 meeting. The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at West Broad Street and Westwoods Boulevard and post-parade activities will begin at 11 a.m. at Westland High School. Election results During May 7 elections, Barth-Kelly was reappointed to her seat for another one-year term and will stand for election again next year. Jim Kennedy and Dorothy Jantzen were re-elected to three-year terms. Additionally, the commission welcomed new member, Scott Taylor, from the Hardesty Heights area who secured a three-year term. Broad Street Park update Shawn Thomas, chair of the recreation and parks committee, said the major delay in starting work on the Broad Street Park is the location of the park entrance in relation to a traffic light at West Broad Street and Alton & Scioto Darby Road. Park plans have the entrance to the west of that location.
