The British are coming!

British soccer coaches will head to Reynoldsburg this summer to work with local youth on their soccer skills.

In conjunction with the Reynoldsburg Parks and Recreation Department, Challenger Sports will hold one of its popular programs, “British Soccer Camps” at Civic Park June 6-10 and Aug. 1-5.

“Due to the increasing popularity, we actually run two weeks of camp with Reynoldsburg Parks and Recreation,” said Joe Medcalf, Challenger Sports senior coach and regional director assistant for Ohio and Kentucky.

The camps will run Monday through Friday and each child will be coached by a member of Challenger’s team of 1,000 British soccer coaches flown to the United States to work on these programs, Medcalf said.

Including Reynoldsburg’s two programs, Challenger Sports will hold more than 3,000 British Soccer Camps this summer and anticipates coaching more than 120,000 players between the ages of 3 and 19.

Medcalf says the camp is more than a week of drills and skills, however. In addition to taking part in a daily regimen of foot skills, technical skills, tactical practics and daily tournament play, the players also will learn lessons in respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship.

The daily tournament the students will participate in teaches the players about life, customs and traditions of other countries. The campers are asked to make up soccer chants, wear the team colors of their country, bring flags and learn as much as they can about the country they represent.

Both camps offered in Reynoldsburg are broken into four age groups:

• Ages 3-4: First Kicks, 9 to 10 a.m., $73;

• Ages 4-6: Mini Soccer, 10:30 a.m. to noon or 5:30 to 7 p.m., $86;

• Ages 6-16: Half Day, 9 a.m. to noon or 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., $113;

• Ages 6-16: Full Day, 9 a.m. to noon and 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., $161.

As part of the cost, each camper will receive a camp T-shirt, a soccer ball, a giant soccer poster and a personalized skills performance evaluation. Any child who signs up online at least 45 days prior to camp will receive a genuine British Soccer Replica Jersey.
