'Curious Savage' takes the stage
There will soon be a flurry of last second activity for those involved with the Pickerington Community Theatre.
Costumes will have to be altered, sets will have to be tweaked, the odd piece to complement a 1940s feel will have to be found, the lighting will have to be fine-tuned, and the actors will have to step up their game.
All of these parts must be in constant motion as the theater group prepares to unveil its latest production, “Curious Savage.”
Starting March 18, the community will be invited to come out and see local and volunteer actors perform the popular comedy based on the work by American playwright John Patrick.
Set in the 1940s, the play revolves around Ethel Savage (portrayed by Diane Hooper), an eccentric and recently widowed woman who discovers that her husband has left her a very large sum of money.
Being a charitable person, she decides to establish a trust to help fund the dreams of others, much to the dismay of her stepchildren.
Against her wishes, they commit her to a sanatorium to obtain control of the fortune for themselves but soon find out that Ethel’s fellow patients and newfound friends will not make their schemes so easy to pull off.
Despite the subject matter and the location of where the play is based, do not expect Curious Savage to be a somber affair.
“It is a quite fun and family friendly comedy,” said Chris Gallaugher, the show’s director.
Gallaugher joined the Community Theatre two years ago and has seen the five-year-old, non-profit company begin to blossom.
The non-permanent troupe has put on productions of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Godspell” and “Seussical the Musical.” Most recently, the group performed a dinner theater based on sketches from the “Carol Burnett Show.”
Despite having only put on famous or known works before, Gallaugher said they are willing to do original works from aspiring playwrights.
“We will be able to do more things as we grow,” he said.
After the run of “Curious Savage,” the troupe plans to begin the audition process for actors and behind the scenes workers for a summer production of “Disney’s Aladdin Jr.” and the fall production of “Give My Regards to Broadway.”
The community is encouraged to participate in the up-and-coming theater company.
Performances for “Curious Savage” will be held at 8 p.m. March 18, 19, 25 and 26, and at 2 p.m. March 20 and 27. Tickets, which range from $10 to $12, can be purchased by calling (614) 833-6990 or through www.pickeringtoncommunitytheatre.org. The performances will be held at the Pickerington Christian Church, located at 575 Diley Road.
