Commission to ask for council's help on overlay project

Christine Palmer from the City of Columbus Planning Division readdressed
Hilltop commissioners on Dec. 7. She first appeared before them on Oct. 5
with the proposed city overlay project for Broad Street.

The implementation of urban and commercial overlays will standardize
development along Broad Street.

"Main goal ­ to make the corridor look better over time," Palmer said.

Since her last presentation, the planning division made a presentation to
all major stakeholders, including large property owners, Franklin Township,
Franklin County, and the Westgate Neighborhood Association on Oct. 8 ­
followed by a community showcase on Nov. 4.

"We¹re in the later phase," Palmer said. "We had a public open house, which
was tremendously attendedŠ there¹s been no problems raised with local
property owners."
Comments made by community members were reviewed by planners then forwarded
to the commission members in November for review.

Palmer said, now that the plan has been finalized the planning division
wants commissions support with approaching Columbus City Council to vote to
implement the plan.

"Then when the city council adopts it, it becomes zoning code," Palmer said.

"This all makes perfect sense to me," Patterson said, before the commission
voted in an approval to approach Columbus City Council ­ which will make the
final decision whether or not to implement the overlays in January.
