SWACO asks residents to lend a hand this holiday season

SWACO reminds residents that the holiday season is the busiest recycling time of the year. To help SWACO crews handle the load, recyclers are being asked to follow some easy tips.

“The easiest way to lend us a hand,” says SWACO Environmental Programs Manager, “J.D.” Compston, “is to crush all cardboard boxes before placing them in our recycling drop off bins. Boxes left intact take up a lot of space inside the bins and that is space that can be used to handle more recyclables.”

Compston also urges residents to try other SWACO recycling locations if they regularly find their favorite drop-off site overwhelmed.

“We have 225 locations across Franklin County. Many times bins located just a few blocks away from a busy site will be empty.”

The locations can be found at www.swaco.org.

Compston says November and December are traditionally the busiest months at SWACO recycling centers. They see over 1,000 tons of recyclables during each of those months. Many drop-off locations are serviced twice a day.

Recycling at SWACO centers has been running nearly 5 percent ahead of last year’s record pace. Residents of Franklin County recycled 15,127 tons with SWACO in 2009.

SWACO recently added four new recycling drop-off recycling locations. They are located at; Home Depot, 5858 Sawmill Road in Dublin; Whitehall Community Park, 402 North Hamilton Road in Whitehall; The Harrisburg Community Center in Harrisburg; and the Lockbourne Post Office in Lockbourne.
