SWAC hopes for another "Pride" area

Last November, members of the Southwest Area Commission took a chance and asked the city of Columbus to bring its popular week-long event, Neighborhood Pride, to one of their areas.

The southwest area held its first Neighborhood Pride in 2010 when the Willow Creek subdivision was awarded the honor.

For one week in September, residents in that area were treated to street sweepings, tree trimmings, fire hydrant repairs, home safety and code inspections, free community dinners and fun events such as a Neighborhood Safety Academy, a Bicycle Safety Festival and a Community Talent Showcase.

The event was so well received and well attended that the commission has decided to apply once again.

At the Nov. 17 meeting, they discussed what areas they would like to host the event.
Commissioner Ralph Horn said he would like to see the Frank Road corridor host the event.

“I think Neighborhood Pride needs to go where the needs are and I think Frank Road is one of the worst,” he said.

Resident Don Parsons agreed with Horn, stating the Frank Road corridor was in need of development and repair.

“We need a new face for the main corridor,” Parsons said.

The other commissioners agreed that the Frank Road corridor could use some beautification, but said that the purpose of Neighborhood Pride is to impact residential areas rather than commercial or industrial ones.

Commissioner Stefanie Coe said Neighborhood Pride requires at least 500-700 parcels in one area and does not think the Frank Road corridor fits that requirement.

She suggested the Harrisburg Pike corridor and the October Ridge and Seneca Woods subdivisions to host Neighborhood Pride. The rest of the commissioners agreed and voted in favor of submitting this area to the city for 2011’s Neighborhood Pride.

Coe said the city would inform the commission in the spring whether the Harrisburg Pike Corridor and the subdivisions were selected.
