Prairie Township seeks state funds for Woodlawn
Prairie Township Trustees are hoping to receive some state money to coincide with federal funding to do work on Woodlawn Avenue next year. Trustees at their Aug. 11 meeting voted to seek funding from Ohio Public Works to help pay for the $2.5 million project of regrading and reconstructing the street, and adding curb cuts to go along with the sidewalks. The township will receive $380,000 from the Safe Routes to School program to install sidewalks on both sides of the street. The township will seek state funds through Ohio Public Works for the street project. Having sidewalks on Woodlawn Avenue will encourage kids to walk and ride their bikes to school, said Township Administrator Tracy Hatmaker. “If we can get kids more active, we can fight obesity,” he said. “Sidewalks will also make the neighborhood safer.” Work could begin as early as April 2011, he said. Sidewalks will be installed, even if the township is not successful in getting the OPW funding. Trustees met in an executive session prior to the meeting. They talked about the vacant Home Town Inn on West Broad Street at Old Village Road. Trustees chairman Steve Kennedy said no decision was made toward a disposition of the building, which is for sale.
