Public input sought for Westland Area Plan update
The Westland Area Commission is moving ahead with updating the Westland Area Plan. Commission members, at the July 21 meeting, authorized Chair Linda Pitts to sign the service agreement with the City of Columbus Development Department. The plan will address urban design, land use, transportation and other issues facing the community as it focuses on development-related policies for the coming years. Pitts is now looking for residents, employees and business and property owners in the Westland area to serve on a working committee and people to participate in one-on-one interviews with officials from the city’s planning department to draw up guidelines for this project. Results of these interviews will be formulated into goals and suggestions that will be presented in public meetings to get community input. People wishing to serve on the committee or be interviewed can contact Pitts by e-mail at waclpitts@aol.com. She would like to have the participants chosen by the next WAC meeting on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. at Doctors Hospital. Those invited to participate in the project are people who live, work and own property and businesses in the area bounded by the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks on the north, Interstate 270 on the east, Big Run South Road and Grove City Road on the south, and Hellbranch Run Creek on the west. WAC member Jim Kennedy said his vote to proceed with the updating came with a note of caution. “But if we don’t do any better than the last time, what do you do?” he asked. His question went unanswered. Pitts is seeking involvement from South-Western City Schools and Prairie Township, as well as residents of the township and the various subdivisions in the Westland area.
