In reaction to news that police Chief Mike Castle is retiring, Franklin Township trustees passed a resolution March 4, to enter into a contract with the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police to aid in the search for a replacement.  

The resolution approved up to $10,000 for the search. In return, the association will place advertisements and screen and rank applicants, said Chairman Timothy Guyton.  

Guyton dismissed rumors there are plans to disband the Franklin Township Police Department and said that such a large investment is evident of that.  

“It couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Guyton.  

“It’s never been our goal to disband our department. We just need to keep our options open and make sure we are giving the taxpayers what they ask for,” he added.  

He acknowledged the township had conversations with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department about contracting for “two cars, 24-7.”  

Guyton said contracting with the Sheriff’s department might be considered at a later date, “but it’s not something we are going to pursue now.”  

Say goodbye to the chief

Castle announced at the meeting that on his last day, April 30, there will be an open house for residents to stop by and say goodbye.  

“The door will be open. If anyone wants to stop by and chit-chat or share war stories, I will be here to do that,” said Castle.
