Westland Senior Citizens The Westland Senior Citizens will meet on Feb. 11 at Columbia Heights United Methodist Church, 775 Galloway Road. The program will be Sharon from the Free Store. The meeting will begin at 11 a.m., with the program to be presented at 11:30 and lunch at noon. Bring a dish to share. For more information, call 878-8996 or 870-6476. Homes on the Hill open house Homes on the Hill CDC will hold a New Location Open House Party on Feb. 10, 4-6 p.m., at their new location, 4318 Westland Mall (use the entrance between Sears and Staples). Light refreshments will be provided. Executive Director Stephen Torsell will serve as host for the evening . Homes on the Hill, CDC provides programs in housing development and homeownership services. These include acquisition, rehab and sales of property for ownership, pre and post purchase counseling, foreclosure counseling and maintenance programs in homeownership services. HOTH has developed over 60 single family rehabs, over 20 new single family homes while assisting hundreds of households become homeowners.
MOPS to meet The LICF MOPS group will meet Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 9:30-11:30 a.m., starting with a light breakfast for moms. The group will view and discuss a segment of “Living Together on Planet MOM” and enjoy one of Kathy Park’s crafts. All mothers of young children ages 0-5 are invited. Franklinton Safety Task Force The Franklinton Safety Task Force will meet Saturday, Feb. 13 from 1-3 p.m. They will discuss safety issues in the area and the Columbus Division of Police gang unit will make a presentation. All Westside residents are invited to attend. The meeting will be held at the Franklinton Branch Library, 1061 W. Town St., in the community room next to the glass display case on the second floor. Free clothing and lunch New Hope Church, 3060 W. Broad St., will provide free women’s men’s and children’s clothing Feb. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free lunch will be provided. All are welcome. This is a monthly event.
HOTH hosts electricity workshop Homes on the Hill, CDC, will host a free workshop on Feb. 16, from 6-8 p.m., focusing on electricity and household utilities for homeowners. This class will include advice on how to perform simple wiring repairs, installation of a dimmer switch, changing light and electrical sockets and additional minor electrical repairs. A Columbus city employee will discuss tips on how to concerve electricity and perform electrical repairs. HOTH counselors will also be present to consult with homeowners individually. Reach out and Read The South-Western City Schools will once again be partnering with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Central OEA/NEA to participate in the annual Reach Out and Read Program. Reach Out and Read is a pediatric literacy program which encourages family literacy activities in the home prior to a child’s entrance into school. Teachers, students, staff, and community members are asked to participate in the project by contributing new, age-appropriate books for children between five months and five years of age. Gently used books for students up to eighth grade level will also be accepted. Books will be collected Feb. 22 through March 12 at all SWCS school buildings. Last year the district was the leading donor for central Ohio through the donation of 19,997 books. This year, the goal is to match or exceed last year’s total. A kick-off celebration will be held at East Franklin Elementary School on March 12 at 1 p.m.
Chili-Soup Cook-off Parkview United Methodist Church, 344 S. Algonquin Ave., will have its annual Chilli-Soup Cook-off on Feb. 20, from 5-7 p.m. Vote for your favorite chilli, soup, and dessert. Cost is $4 for adults and $1.50 for children ages 10 and under.
Saint Agnes fish dry The Knights of Columbus and Saint Agnes Parish will host an all you can eat fish fry each Friday, Feb. 12 - March 26 in the Saint Agnes cafeteria, 2364 W. Mound St., from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The dinner will include perch, two sides, rolls, drinks and a dessert. Meatless spaghetti will also be available. Cost is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors and $4 for children.
Spaghetti dinner The Galloway Presbyterian Church is serving up a romantic spaghetti dinner on Valentine’s Day weekend, Feb. 13, 4-7 p.m. Spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, salad, drinks and homemade pies are on the menu. Cost is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $3 for children under 12. The church is located at Hall and Galloway roads, at 6191 Hall Road. For more information call 878-5015.
Valentine banquet The Central Baptist Church, 1955 Frank Road, will host a valentine’s banquet on Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. The church’s teen group (B.R.I.C.K.) will sponsor the event. Glenwood Free Taxes Ministry The Glenwood Free Taxes Ministry offers anyone making $49,000 or less during 2009 free tax preparation. This ministry is performed by IRS certified and trained preparers who will e-file your federal and state (Ohio only) tax returns. With direct deposit, refunds are received in as little as 8-15 days. The ministry will run from Jan. 18 – April 12. Taxes will be prepared on Mondays from noon – 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Appointments are expected to last approximately one hour and can be made by calling Glenwood United Methodist Church at 274-8469 or stopping by the church office at 2833 Valleyview Dr.

Rock on the Hill Rock on the Hill will provide free after school fun for Westside kids every Wednesday, from 4-6 p.m., at 2500 W. Broad St. Activities include snacks, art projects, games and help with homework. Bus transportation will be provided from West Broad Elementary, but parents must pick children up by 6 p.m. Now enrolling first grade through fifth grade. Friends hosts senior group Senior citizens are invited to a seniors group at Friends Worship Center, 3030 Clime Road, on the first Thursday of each month from 12-2:30 p.m. The event will feature a light lunch, games and fellowship. Golden Age Center The Salvation Army Golden Age Center, 2300 W. VFW Post 6065 VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. Exercise for seniors Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities. Each participant can adapt the routine to his/her comfort level. The cost is $35 for each eight-week session. Call the instructor, Lori Vazquez, at 989-4595 with questiions.
Paper recycling at Parkview Parkview United Methodist Church, 344 S. Algonquin Ave., is providing the community with recycling bins for paper products.
