It's cookie time of the year again for the Eastside

It’s time for the Girl Scouts annual cookie sale.

From Jan. 9 to 29, Eastside Columbus-area Girl Scouts from Ohio’s Heartland Council will begin ringing doorbells and staffing booths, selling eight varieties of cookies available only from Girl Scouts.

At $3 a box, the cookies go a long way toward supporting the ingenuity of girls involved in Girl Scouts and are an investment in girls’ leadership. The program is an important part of Girl Scouting’s Business and Economic Literacy initiative for girls ages 5 to 17. By selling cookies, girls learn finance, marketing, and public speaking skills, along with valuable experiences to build self-confidence and help the girls develop their own personal leadership style.

Cookie sales also offset the expense of Girl Scout camps and programs, keeping costs low for girls to attend day and residential camps, and participate locally in programs related to leadership and service, the arts, sports, health and fitness, science and technology, nature and more.

People who are not contacted by a Girl Scout may call 1-800-621-7042 to find a nearby cookie sale booth. Cookies will be delivered starting Feb. 22. In addition to door-to-door sales, girls will hold booth sales at various locations throughout the eastside Columbus area beginning Feb. 26.

This year’s cookie lineup includes the ever-popular Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Trefoils, Lemon Chalet Cremes and Dulce De Leche. The new cookie making its debut this year is Thank U Berry Munch – a crispy cookie filled with real cranberries and white fudge chips.

Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls manage inventory, set goals, learn money management, and develop marketing skills. Essentially, the girls run their own business. The entire troop sets a goal and follows a plan leading toward that goal. Girl Scout troops use funds from the cookie activity to fund service projects, plan exciting trips, visit COSI, attend camp, and so much more. Many successful women have credited their business skills to the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Since 1917, the Girl Scout cookie sale has become a famous annual event that has helped girls develop important leadership skills they will use throughout their lives. Whether their journey includes becoming a doctor, teacher, businesswoman, president of the PTA, or superstar athlete, the Girl Scout Cookie Program gives them the self-esteem they need to reach their goals.
