Council continues to consider moratorium on condos
Reynoldsburg City Council is continuing to examine issuing a moratorium on condominium construction. During its service committee meeting Oct. 19, Councilman Mel Clemens said the situation has arisen due to condominiums being built and developers renting the spaces out rather than selling them.
Clemens said he has heard numerous complaints from those who bought properties expecting a condominium setting and instead having a rental property setting.
"I do feel sorry for the people who got involved in this," he said. "We cannot control what has happened, but we can help with what happens in the future."
There is a need to set restrictions for those properties with site plans not yet approved and future developments, he said.
Clemens said restrictions such as increasing green space required to 30 percent rather than the current 15 percent, reducing the number of units allotted to each building to four and requiring the use of higher quality building materials are being considered.
"This is to slow the development of multi-family developments," Development Director Lucas Haire said.
"I don't want anymore apartments," Clemens said. "I don't want to put a complete stop to condos. I want to prevent them from being leased out."
