Trunk or Treat Trunk or Treat will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church. Come and see decorated trunks and get free treats. Fall Soup Supper The Fall Soup Supper at Galloway Presbyterian Church is Oct. 31, from 4-8 p.m. Bean and ham or chili soup, cornbread, coleslaw, pumpkin pie and whipped cream, all for $7.50 (kids 8 and under eat free). Westland Area Library to close for roof repair The Westland Area Library, 4740 W. Broad St., is tentatively scheduled to be closed for repairs from Oct. 21-23. The tower on the building will be removed and replaced with a cap in order to fix leaks that have been a problem for over fifteen years. These repairs will be paid for by the owners of the Lincoln Village Shopping Center, at no cost to the library. Dates for closure could change because the construction schedule will be dictated by weather. Library patrons should call the Westland Area Library at 878-1301 on the above dates to determine whether the library is open.
Westland Area Commission The next meeting of the Westland Area Commission is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Doctors Hospital, 5100 West Broad St. The guest speaker will be Clarence Mingo, Franklin County auditor. He will discuss property valuations, as well as the functions of the auditor’s office and projects that he’s working on. All residents of the Westland Area are encouraged to attend.
Asset protection seminar The Lincoln Village Residents Association will present a program on protecting your assets Nov. 7 at the Westland Area Library, from 10 a.m. to noon. This will be an opportunity for all to review their personal insurance coverages for their home, autos and personal property. Additionally, the program will provide information on long term care and the new partnership program, Annuities and Life Insurance. Handouts will be provided for all participants. Military prayer service The Alkire Road Church of Christ, 2779 Alkire Road will host a prayer service for men and women serving in the military on Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. A special invitation is extended to the families of those serving. Bring with you the information on your family member. Pictures and addresses will be nice also. Veteran’s Day program Crossroads United Methodist Church is presenting its 3rd annual Veteran’s Day program on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the church at 1100 S. Hague Ave. Local cub and boy scouts will be presenting the colors. A special video by Col. Mike Malone will be shown.
Hilltop Historical Society Veteran’s Day program The Hilltop Historical Society is presenting a Veteran’s Day program in remembrance of Columbus WWI and WWII hero, Eddie Rickenbacker. Local Rickenbacker advocate and historian Richard Hoerle will be presenting a slide show about the life and many accomplishments of Columbus native Eddie Rickenbacker. The program will be held at Crossroads United Methodist Church, 1100 S. Hague Ave., on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.

Fight the Hike petition online Fight the Hike Ohio, a newly formed coalition of citizens and civic leaders across the state opposing Ohio American Water’s (OAW) proposed rate increase, has sponsored an online petition. Uptown on the Hilltop returns The Uptown on the Hilltop Parade will return this year. It will take place on Nov. 1, at 1:30 p.m. The parade will begin at the Ohio Department of Transportation on West Broad Street and continue to the intersection of Broad and Powell. It will be hosted Friends of the Hilltop (FOTH) and co-chaired by state representatives Dan Stewart and Jim Hughes. Westland Senior Citizens The Westland Senior Citizens will meet on Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. at Columbia Heights United Methodist Church, 775 Galloway Road. The Moose Band will entertain. A potluck lunch will be served at noon. For more information, call 830-0134.
Hilltop Post Office to have new retail hours The Hilltop Post Office will reduce hours at the end of October. Because of the significant drop in mail volume and economic recession, the U.S. Postal Service is expected to incur a $7 billion budget shortfall this year. As a result, the USPS has implemented several strategies to try and offset the situation, including a revision of Post Office hours. “We’re trying to find ways to offer the same excellent service for our customers while staying within our budget,” said Columbus Postmaster Robin Ware. Beginning Oct. 24, the retail window at the Hilltop Finance branch will change to 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2 - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday. Mail delivery will be unaffected by the change.
Free clothing and lunch New Hope Church, 3060 W. Broad St., will provide free women’s, men’s and some children’s clothing on Oct. 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free lunch will be provided. All are welcome. This is a monthly event.
St. Steven to host spaghetti dinner St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, 4131 Clime Road, will host a spaghetti dinner sponsored by the Women’s Club, on Nov. 7, from 5:30-8 p.m. The dinner will feature spaghetti and meatballs or chicken alfredo with salad, Italian bread, dessert and a drink, Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children under 12.
Low-cost flu shots This year, more than ever, it is important to protect yourself and your loved ones against seasonal influenza. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a yearly seasonal flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against seasonal flu. LifeCare Alliance is helping to ensure a healthy central Ohio community this flu season by offering low-cost flu shots to anyone, age 3 and up. Also, LifeCare Alliance offers a no-cost flu shot alternative to high risk adults without health coverage and who meet specific financial guidelines. Walk-in flu shot clinics will be held at LifeCare Alliance every Friday, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 1699 West Mound St. In addition, flu shots will be given by appointment for those unable to attend the walk-in clinics. Music, Message and Meal There will be a free hot meal served at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2930 W. Broad St., on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 6-7 p.m. as a part of Hoge’s HM3 (Music, Message and Meal) program. All are welcome to attend. Rock on the Hill Rock on the Hill will provide free after school fun for Westside kids every Wednesday, from 4-6 p.m., at 2500 W. Broad St. Activities include snacks, art projects, games and help with homework. Bus transportation will be provided from West Broad Elementary, but parents must pick children up by 6 p.m. Now enrolling first grade through fifth grade. Friends hosts senior group Senior citizens are invited to a seniors group at Friends Worship Center, 3030 Clime Road, on the second Tuesday of each month from 12-2:30 p.m. The event will feature a light lunch, games and fellowship. VFW Post 6065 VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. Exercise for seniors Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities.
