Military prayer service
Alkire Road Church of Christ, 2779 Alkire Road, will host a prayer service for our men and women serving in the military Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. They are extending a special invitation to the families of those serving. Bring with you the information on your family member, including pictures and addresses. There is a board to display their information. There will be no collections taken. Evening service will follow at 6 p.m.

Free homeowner workshop on plumbing basics
Homes on the Hill CDC will host a free homeowner education workshop geared toward current homeowners Aug. 18, from 6-7:45 p.m. at the Westland Area Library. At the workshop, individuals will learn to maintain their homes through basic repairs and regular home inspections. The course is open to the public and free of charge.
The upcoming workshop will focus on plumbing basics and preventative maintenance. Guest speaker Cliff Spruill, rehab tech for the City of Columbus, will take questions and demonstrate simple home repairs.

GriefShare
GriefShare recovery support group will be hosted by Cypress Wesleyan Church in Galloway each Sunday at 6 p.m., Sept. 13 through Nov. 15. The class will meet in the District Center, 457 Alton-Darby Creek Road. The class is free, there is a $12 workbook fee – scholarships are available. DivorceCare
DivorceCare recovery seminar and support group will meet at Cypress Wesleyan Church, 377 Alton-Darby Creek Road, each Sunday at 6 p.m., Sept. 13 through Nov. 22. There will also be one session held on Saturday, Sept. 26. DC4K (DivorceCare for Kids) will be offered at the same time for children ages 5-12. The classes are free, however, there is a charge to cover the workbook ($12 for DivorceCare and $15 per child for DC4K, scholarships available). Skate Park to host skateboarding competition
The Grove City Friends of the Skate Park will hold a skateboarding competition on Aug. 29 at the Grove City Skate Park. Proceeds from the competition will help pay for skate park maintenance and improvements as well as provide funds for future events.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. and is $10. The competition begins at 11 a.m. Participants will compete in one of four divisions: beginner, intermediate, advanced and expert. The street and bowl divisions will be judged by a panel of experienced skateboarders and prizes will be awarded to the top three places in these divisions. Skaters of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate. The event is expected to attract skaters from across Ohio.
The skate park will be closed to non-participants for the duration of the competition.
In case of inclement weather, the contest will be held Aug. 30. Information about event cancellations can be accessed on the Parks and Recreation information line at 277-3060.

Westland Senior Citizens
The Westland Senior Citizens will meet on Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at Columbia Heights United Methodist Church, 775 Galloway Road. The speaker will be Chief Feustel of the Prairie Township Fire Department. A potluck lunch will be served at noon. For more information, call 830-0134.

Friends Worship Center hosts senior group
Senior citizens are invited to a seniors group at Friends Worship Center, 3030 Clime Road, on the second Tuesday of each month from 12-2:30 p.m. The event will feature a light lunch, games and fellowship. American Legion Post 799
American Legion Post 799 holds their monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Prairie Township Fire Station, 123 Inah Ave. The American legion is dedicated to supporting veterans and our country and is a non-profit organization. Golden Age Center
The Salvation Army Golden Age Center, 2300 W. Mound St., invites anyone aged 60 or over to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for lunch, crafts, movies, BINGO, games, health and fitness, and fun. VFW Post 6065
VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. They strive to perpetuate the memory and history of their dead, and to assist their widows and orphans. Call Will Davis at 309-0171 for further information.
Exercise for seniors
Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities. Each participant can adapt the routine to his/her comfort level. The cost is $35 for each eight-week session. Call the instructor, Lori Vazquez, at 989-4595 with questiions.
Paper recycling at Parkview
Parkview United Methodist Church, 344 S. Algonquin Ave., is providing the community with recycling bins for paper products. Bring newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc., to the green and yellow bins in the church parking lot. No cardboard or phone books will be accepted. Questions, call 875-7231.
