Franklin Township going Green

On Aug. 4, the Franklin Township Board of Trustees received an e-mail from the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) to gauge the township’s interest in becoming a member of the Central Ohio Green Pact – a program for local governments committed to helping improve the environment throughout their communities.
   
According to Chairperson Timothy Guyton, they were very interested in joining the Pact, and at their Aug. 6 meeting, resolved to become a member.
   
“Officially we haven’t joined yet until we go to the signing ceremony in October,” he said referring to the MORPC Summit on Sustainability and the Environment on Oct. 6 at COSI. Guyton will be the township representative signing the Pact that day.
   
The Central Ohio Green Pact is a series of 10 steps local governments are involved with to help improve the economic vibrancy of the community. The steps Franklin Township will be involved with include collaborating to purchase Green products; adopting sustainable land use policies; building Green facilities and reducing energy consumption; educating and engaging the community; reducing emissions and climate protection; and mass transportation, which explores ways to improve and promote alternative transportation in the region.
   
Guyton said they only steps they cannot be involved with include Greener public fleets; growing a strong, Green economy; reducing waste; and preserving Green space and creating Greenways. He said cost is a factor in these steps, but the township has been working on ways to reduce waste.
