WAC looks for community input
(by Sandi Latimer, Staff Writer - June 18, 2009)
The Westland Area Commission will have an information table at the Westland Area Holiday Parade on July 4 where members will be getting the public’s vote on a new logo, as well as informing the public about the work of the commission.
At the June 17 WAC meeting, Community Relations Chairman Ashley Hoye displayed several versions of a logo he designed that would be used on banners, letterheads and other items promoting the commission. One design was in the shape of the area the commission covers with the City of Columbus logo in the middle, while another bore the seal of Prairie Township. Two others were in the form of a triangle with the individual seals, while a fifth bore the seal of the City of Columbus superimposed on a color map of the area that defines township territory in one color, city territory in another.
The table will be set up under a tent in the parking lot of the Lincoln Plaza Shopping Center where activities are centered after the parade.
Hoye also plans to have a map of the area served by the commission and will hand out information that tells about the commission and the work it does and can do.
“We’ll be trying to get more interest from the community,” he said.
Westland Area Plan
Commission member Patricia Brown, who serves as Planning and Development chair, outlined the work that needs to be done to prepare for updating the Westland Area Plan.
While she has not heard if her request for an update will be on the city’s agenda in 2010, she wants to be ready in case.
The plan addresses land uses, urban development, recreation and parks and transportation. Should Columbus decide to update the plan next year, city planners will work with the commission in three workshops where the public can provide their input.
Before they reach that stage, Brown said, WAC will have to name a working committee, ideally 12 people.
“We have to figure out how many will be from WAC and how many from the community,” she said.
She is also looking for 10 people from the community who can be interviewed about what they would like to see included in the update.
Anyone wishing to be involved in this project can contact Brown or see her at the July 15 meeting of the commission.
