Pickerington Central to get rosy welcome
(by Christine Bryant, Eastside Editor - April 28, 2009)
Pickerington Central High School band members soon will get a rosy welcome.
Tournament of Roses President Gary Disano formally will invite the students to participate in the 2010 annual parade when he visits Pickerington May 4-6.
The public is welcome to attend any of the events lined up for the tournament president's visit, said Rick Knapp, one of the school band's leaders.
At 7:30 p.m. May 4, a Veteran's Appreciation Concert will be held at Central High School. Disano is a Navy veteran and will assist with the concert.
A dinner will be served before the concert in the high school commons beginning at 5:45 p.m.
On May 5, a dessert buffet will be held in the commons from 7 to 8 p.m. in which visitors may enjoy treats and bid on raffle baskets donated by local businesses. Visitors also may order parade pins and check out the Pasadena, Calif., trip activities.
Following the dessert buffet, Disano will formally invite the Marching Tigers during a ceremony held at 8 p.m. in Central Gym. Disano also will present the band with its official Tournament of Roses Parade flag.
Other events may be added as well, Knapp said.
During the trip, Disano will be joined by Executive Committee member Sally Bixby and Dr. Harlan Bixby.
The 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade will be historical for the state, with three Ohio bands slated to perform. In addition to Pickerington Central, Ohio University and Ohio State School for the Blind also were selected for the parade.
Pickerington Central is no stranger to being in the spotlight. The Marching Tigers participated in three Tournament of Roses parades in 1993, 1997 and 2006, as well as took part in several other national parades including the Washington D.C. National Veteran's Day Parade in 2007.
