Bexley gearing up for Wolff visit
The Bexley Community Book Club will end this school year's season with an author who is considered a master of the memoir genre.
Author Tobias Wolff will speak to book enthusiasts as he visits Bexley April 27 as part of the Bexley Education Foundation's Community Book Club initiative.
The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Schottenstein Theatre at 326 S. Cassingham Road. Tickets to the public program cost $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $5 for those holding a student I.D. Bexley students with a Lions' Pride pass will be admitted free of charge.
Throughout the year, Bexley High School students have read Wolff's work, and will have the opportunity to interact with him through two afternoon sessions that day before his evening appearance.
Seven students who won a memoir writing contest also will have the opportunity for one-on-one time with Wolff during a writer's workshop.
The Bexley Education Foundation received 21 entries from students submitting their own short memoirs. A committee of Bexley High School English teachers and graduate students from the Creative Writing program at The Ohio State University announced the following workshop participants:
* Junior Andrea Boutelle for "My Calling in Life" * Sophomore Molly Brewer for "Re-Building a Dream" * Junior Hallie Dolin for "Practice Makes Practice" * Junior Erin Kellogg for "She Taught Me" * Freshman Aaron Pelz for "The Rock Slinger" * Sophomore Joan Spicer for "Dr. Pepper" * Junior Hannah Wendling for "Puppets in the Penitentiary"
During the nearly one-hour workshop, Wolff will offer advice and lead the students through the process of creative writing, said Suzanne Goldsmith-Hirsch, programs and communications coordinator for the foundation.
"It's a pretty unique opportunity for these students," she said.
The winner of the 2008 Story Prize, Wolff published the autobiographical "This Boy's Life" and "In Pharaoh's Army." His latest short story collection, "Our Story Begins," recently was released in paperback.
Wolff teaches at Stanford University.
