Paper recycling at Parkview
Parkview United Methodist Church, 344  S. Algonquin Ave., is providing the community with recycling bins for paper products. Bring newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc., to the green and yellow bins in the church parking lot. No cardboard or phone books will be accepted. Questions, call 875-7231.

Exercise for seniors
Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities. Each participant can adapt the routine to his/her comfort level. The cost is $35 for each eight-week session. Call the instructor, Lori Vazquez, at 989-4595 with questions.

VFW Post 6065
VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. They strive to perpetuate the memory and history of their dead, and to assist their widows and orphans. Call Will Davis at 309-0171 for further information.

Golden Age Center
The Salvation Army Golden Age Center, 2300 W. Mound St., invites anyone aged 60 or over to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for lunch, crafts, movies, BINGO, games, health and fitness, and fun. Call Ellen Marvin, senior director, at 274-7600, ext. 108, one day in advance to reserve lunch for $1.25 per day. Fee for expenses is $9 per month.

MOPS at Cypress Wesleyan

Awana Clubs
Awana Clubs for boys and girls, from three-years-old to sixth grade, will be held Wednesdays, from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. at Briggs Road Baptist Church, 3231 Briggs Road. Call 272-7430 for more information.

American Legion Post 799
American Legion Post 799 holds their monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Prairie Township Fire Station, 123 Inah Ave. The Post is actively focusing on fund raising activities, family activities for the younger generation, setting up a Sons of the Legion auxiliary and increasing the ladies auxiliary.

Kid’s Club at Parkview
The Kid’s Club at Parkview United Methodist Church, 344 S. Algonquin Ave.,  is for all young people between ages 5 and 11. Those in attendance will play games, have snacks,  learn Bible stories, and do crafts. The club meets 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday  evenings. There will be a snack, but no dinner. There is no cost.
 
Free meals offered
The Church of the Lamb of God, 2216 Sullivant Ave., offers free meals on the fourth Saturday of each month.

“Wising Up”
Cypress Wesleyan Church, 377 Alton Darby Creek Road in Galloway, will host “Wising Up, Wherever Life Happens,” a woman’s study on the book of Proverbs with Beth Moore on Sundays, Jan. 11 - March 29, from 6-8 p.m.in the Fireside Room, lower level, building B - north entrance. The registration deadline is Jan. 4, cost is $10, which includes a note-taking booklet - available at the first class.

Financial assistance
Catholic Social Services’ Senior Program has applications for the Home Energy Assistance program, Percentage of Income payment plan and AT&T Life Line. These programs one-time financial assisstance or ongoing financial assistance to low-income seniors and low-income disabled individuals. NDCC career classes
Are you looking for a new job? Get the skills and the support you need at New Directions Career Center (NDCC), a non-profit, United Way agency. Two classes, facilitated by licensed career counselors, are being offered during the month of January.
The first is New Directions. This class is designed especially for woman who are changing careers or re-entering the work force. Participants learn about themselves as they refine their abilities to overcome barriers to professional success. They also learn practical skills such as networking, interviewing, resume writing and much more. The four week program will be held from Jan. 12 through Feb. 6. Classes are held, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The second class is Creating Career Options. This class is for the professional who is seeking employment or a career change. Participants learn through assessment how to find a job that’s a good fit as well as how to research optimal career options. This class is held on Jan. 26, 28 and 31. Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
NDCC assists individuals regardless of their ability to pay. Graduates of NDCC programs are eligible to enroll in placement services at no charge.

Women’s conference
Cypress Women’s Ministries invites you to  a women’s conference with Sheila Walsh, a featured speaker with Women of Faith, on Feb. 14, at Cypress Wesleyan Church, 377 Alton-Darby Creek Road in Galloway. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Cypress Bookstore following all weekend worship services, at the church office (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.) or at the Georgesville Square LifeWay Christian Store.

DivorceCare at Cypress
DivorceCare recovery seminar and support group will meet at Cypress Wesleyan Church, 377 Alton-Darby Creek Road in Galloway each Sunday at 6 p.m., beginning Feb. 8 and continuing through May 3. There will also be one session held on Saturday, Feb. 21. DC4K (DivorceCare for Kids) will be offered at the same time and your children, ages 5 through 12, are welcome to attend if you are in the DivorceCare class. The classes are free, however, there is a charge to cover the cost of a workbook ($12 for DivorceCare and $15 per child for DC4K – scholarships available). Cypress hosts GriefShare
GriefShare recovery support group (your journey from mourning to Joy) will be hosted by Cypress Wesleyan Churcheach Sunday at 6 p.m. beginning Feb. 8 and continuing through May 3. The class will meet at the district center, 457 Alton-Darby Creek Road (the brick building north of the church, close to the railroad tracks). The class is free, however, there is a $12 workbook – scholarships are available. Free clothing and lunch
New Hope Church, 3060 W. Broad St., will provide free women’s, men’s and some children’s clothing on Jan. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free lunch will be provided. All are welcome. This is a monthly event. Read the Westside Messenger for future dates.

CLC information sessions
The Columbus Literacy Council is holding information sessions about tutoring and other volunteer opportunities on Jan. 24 and Feb. 21 from 9:30-11 a.m. The sessions will be held at the CLC office, 195 N. Grant Ave. Register at www.columbusliteracy.org or call Norma Wetzel at 221-5013 ext. 215.

IBC celebrates 75 years
Immanuel Baptist Church, 3417 Palmetto St., invites the community to help celebrate the church’s 75th anniversary of ministry on the Hilltop by attending a concert with the Mark Trammell Trio on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m., doors will open at 6:30. “Soup-er” Saturday
The Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 W. Broad St., will resume thier monthly “Soup-er” Saturday fund raisers on Jan. 17, from 1-3 p.m. Featured will be chili, hot dogs, chips, dessert and a beverage. This event is open to the public. For more information, call 878-5110.

PTSC Lunch and Learns
The Prairie Township Senior Center is sponsoring Lunch and Learn sessions during the month of January. These sessions, including lunch, are free and open to the public. They are held at 12 p.m. at the center, 4616 W. Broad St. For more information and reservations, call 878-5110.

•Jan. 21, Sarah Heatwole from Mayfair Village will speak on the newest advances in speech therapy for victims of stroke.
•Jan. 28, Caryl Berry of the Happy Wanderers will outline the bus trips being planned for 2009.

Maximize Your Memory
The Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 W. Broad St., will host the Maximize Your Memory seminar on Monday, Jan. 26 at 1:30 p.m. Elaine Magary with Mt. Carmel will help you learn the difference between “normal” memory loss and the symptoms of dementia, as well as important strategies to boost your brain health. For more information, call 878-5110.

The Prairie Township Senior Center hosts the following excercise programs that are free and open to the public:

Westland class of 1979

Spaghetti dinner
The Central Crossing High School NJROTC unit will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner on Feb. 8 from 12 to 4 p.m. The event will be held at the American Legion Paschall Post #164, 3363 McDowell Road in Grove City. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. The dinner includes salad, rolls, dessert and a beverage. Tickets will be available at the door.

Falcons perform in Merry Tuba
On Dec. 15, three tuba players from the Franklin Heights High School band participated in the annual Merry Tuba Christmas. The band members were: Leslie Lenihan, Kenneth Simmons and Thomas Cloward. This year’s event took place at Capital University, with two evening performances. More than 200 tubas, baritones and euphoniums performed a selection of Christmas carols.

FHHS class of 1989

Westland Senior Citizens
The Westland Senior Citizens will meet on Jan. 22 at Columbia Heights United Methodist Church, 775 Galloway Road. The meeting will be at 11 a.m. Entertainment will be pianist Martha Peterson, who will be accompanied by a singer. A potluck lunch will be served at noon, with cards to follow. HOTH hosts workshops
Homes on the Hill CDC, 12 South Terrace Ave., will hold a free workshop focusing on financial management for homeowners. The class will include advice on how to use home equity responsibly and when it is advantageous to refinance, as well as tips on saving money, developing a household budget and paying off debt.
Presenters will be provided by Increase, CDC. HOTH counselors will also be present to consult individually with homeowners.
The class is free and open to the public; all are welcome and encouraged to attend. The workshop may qualify participants for Increase CDC’s IDA programs.

Deeper Life Bible Study
Abundant Life Tabernacle, 35 Derrer Road, is hosting a Deeper Life Bible Study Class. It is a 12 week class that will cover from Genesis to Revelations.
