Old-Time Harvest Day celebrates autumn traditions
The scrape of a saw against wood, the clang of a blacksmith’s hammer and the splash of just-pumped water into a metal bucket are just a few of the sounds of the mid-19th century that visitors can experience at the Old-Time Harvest Day from 1-5 p.m. on Oct. 7, at Century Village at Fryer Park, 4185 Orders Road, Grove City.
For most of Ohio’s history, the fall harvest was a time when neighbors gathered to help each other reap the results of months of labor during the growing season and to prepare for the harsh winter months. The Southwest Franklin County Historical Society and the city of Grove City provide an opportunity for families to connect with the history of their community through demonstrations and hands-on activities, including creating period crafts and toys, playing old-fashioned games and working with hand-powered tools. Demonstrators include leather toolers, a black smith, butter churners, chair caners and wool spinners. Century Village represents a typical community in Central Ohio during the mid to late 1800s. Visitors can explore a one-room schoolhouse, a windmill, two log houses, log and crib barns, a blacksmith shop and an herb garden while enjoying traditional musical performances on string instruments.
