Central Crossing students attempt to break world record
Instead of finishing their usual day of class, students at Central Crossing High School worked on a different kind of project on Sept. 14.
The students took part in “Break’n Backs and Break’n Records,” a school-wide attempt to break the “Guinness Book of World Records’” world record for the largest piggyback race. The record-breaking attempt was part of the school’s 10th anniversary celebration and included the piggyback race, food and a variety of games after setting the record. “I am proud of our school, students, and community,” Principal Jill Burke said before the event. “We continue to work hard to increase in student achievement at Central Crossing and our 10th anniversary is the perfect time to celebrate those academic accomplishments.” The event got the community involved as well, and the day’s sponsors ranged from Raising Canes and Dairy Queen to BW3 and Home Depot. When planning the world record attempt, organizers aimed to beat the previous record of 388. Just days before the event, however, they found out the record had been beaten by another school, putting the record at more than 1,200. The students quickly scrambled to get everyone signed up, making for a very interesting few days, according to organizer Valerie Mussi. Central Crossing has an enrollment of about 1,600 students, more than enough to break the updated record. Students and teachers gathered on the school’s football field for what was meant to be a practice run, but after the length of time it took to organize such a rowdy crowd, the plan was scrapped in favor of getting the record broken while they could. In all of the chaos, the students still seemed to have a great time, and no one, even the faculty, could complain about the start to their weekend. “Our school has been wonderful today, it’s just been so much fun,” Mussi said.
