Reynoldsburg hosts Civil War re-enactment, encampment

The Reynoldsburg Civil War Encampment and Re-enactment will bring history to life this month.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 23 and from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 24 at Civic Park, 6800 Daugherty Drive, Reynoldsburg.

This free public event is cosponsored by the Society of Civil War Surgeons and the Reynoldsburg Parks and Recreation Department.

More than 500 re-enactors will show the experiences and day-to-day life of soldiers and civilians during the Civil War. The encampment will include re-enactors portraying cavalry, artillery, infantry, medical cartographers and civilians.

Visitors may tour the camps of the Confederate and Union forces and experience life as soldiers and civilians. Visitors also will meet Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis; Generals Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee and William Tecumseh Sherman; the Drummer Boy of Shiloh; and Johnny Clem, or spend time drilling with the infantry or artillery.

The re-enactment also will feature many activities geared toward children. Re-enactors will teach them basic infantry drill and maneuvering, and children may participate in the Children’s Battle.

Following the battle, children may witness medical demonstrations, learn about period clothing during the fashion show or stay and dance during the Saturday evening ball.

Period merchants will be on site selling their wares, and food will be available through the Lions Club and Knights of Reynoldsburg.
