Hilltop YMCA hopes to expand programs, remodel
The YMCA of Central Ohio aims to raise $1.5 million to better its branches with expanded programs and improved facilities. So far it has raised $455,000. According to Paul Westenheffer, executive director of the Hilltop YMCA, they hope to raise $50,000 toward the capital campaign and their branch. The official kickoff for the Hilltop YMCA Capital Campaign is June 27 from 6-8 p.m. Funds will be used to adapt to a growing member base. Approximately 4,600 residents belong to the branch. The building is 52 years old, but in nice shape, Westenheffer said. However, the facility is running out of space for programs and areas like the locker rooms are not accessible to the handicap or elderly. The Hilltop YMCA plans to add a multi-purpose room, family designated changing rooms, expand its Child Watch and Wellness Center, and make the locker rooms more accessible. All residents are invited to the kickoff event. Westenheffer said they plan to have a fire engine present for a “Touch a Truck,” for children to enjoy and explore. They will also distribute the details concerning improvements and pass out educational material regarding the benefits the YMCA is to the community. For many families the YMCA is a place children can exercise and be educated after school, cared for while parents work and where adolescents may find guidance and tutoring.
