Cars in the Park raises thousands to benefit children
Over the last three years Cars in the Park raised thousands of dollars to benefit children at A Special Wish Foundation. Organizers continue this tradition with their annual car show in conjunction with the Hilltop Bean Dinner on June 23. Danny Jones, owner of A-Tec Upholstery & Body Shop, and his team sponsor and coordinate the event. A few years ago Jones attended a local car show, which raised money for A Special Wish Foundation. Jones was inspired by the joy and goodwill experienced by the children. “That is when he decided that he would give all the profits from the Cars in the Park to A Special Wish Foundation and has done so for the last two years and counting,” said Danielle Carr, office associate at A-Tec Upholstery. Jones and Carr work year round to find sponsors and market the event. In 2011, the car show raised approximately $2,000. Last year also marked the highest number of vehicles included in the show, nearly 300 cars in total, ranging from A-Models to modern designs. According to Carr, this year’s Cars in the Park will have 13 specialty awards, including motorcycles and the favorite three models from the 1920s through 2000s. The big award is a 5-foot trophy for the Special Wish Favorite – judged and chosen by the foundation’s children. Three trophies are sponsored by Performance Chrysler and Jeep, including the Special Wish Favorite. Carr said Performance Chrysler donated a generous gift to A Special Wish Foundation and will bring two new vehicles for display near the shelter house. Visitors may enter 50/50 raffles and win a range of prizes, including tools, toys, coupons and gift certificates. Raffle items are donated by local and non-local businesses and proceeds benefit the fundraiser. Representatives from A Special Wish Foundation will have items for sale in the shelter house. Registration for Cars in the Park will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and judging will happen 1 - 3 p.m. The awards will be handed out at 4 p.m. For information on registering or how to donate, call A-Tec Upholstery at 272-5217.
