SWCS reports its enrollment numbers
For the past 12 years, enrollment in the South-Western City Schools District has hovered around the 20,000 mark. There have been dips and spikes, but the district has largely remained steady with its student population. At the March 26 board of education meeting, Brian Hamler, one of the district’s personnel directors, gave enrollment projections for the 2012/13 school year. “We are expecting an increase of 160 to 170 students,” Hamler said. According to the projection, the student population breaks down like this: •Combining all of the elementary schools, enrollment is projected to rise by 101 students. Buckeye Woods will see the largest increase with 34 additional students while Alton Hall will see the largest decrease with 21 students. •Of the intermediate schools, there will be a decrease of 110 students. The school with the largest decrease of students (a projected 51) is Franklin Woods. The only intermediate school projected to see an increase in population is Galloway Ridge. •Enrollment in middle school is projected to decrease by 16. Finland Middle is the only one projected to see student population growth, by an estimated 39 additional students. •With the high schools, which included students from the Career Academy, there is a projected enrollment increase of 197 students. None of the high schools are projected to see a decrease in enrollment. •Head Start and preschool will also see increases by eight and 20, respectively. As for the total population, South-Western is projected to have 20,251 students for 2012/13. “We’ll be flat for the next four years,” said Hamler. Hamler said the district would be consistent with previous enrollment patterns. Superintendent Dr. Bill Wise said South-Western is one of the only urban districts that are maintaining their enrollment or slightly growing.
