Residents in Greene Countrie area want playground back
Residents of the Greene Countrie subdivision miss the playground equipment that was removed from their neighborhood park. They shared their concerns at the Westland Area Commission (WAC) meeting on March 21. According to Kathy Spatz, parks development specialist at Columbus Recreation and Parks, the playground equipment was removed due to its unstable condition. She said the equipment had to be replaced. The new equipment will cost an estimated $40,000. The parks department is looking at items from three companies to purchase equipment. It will require around six weeks for installation. Residents also discussed problems with graffiti, the poor condition of the shelter house, drug activity and the topic of security. Becky Larson, a 20-year resident of Greene Countrie, said she has seen alleged drug deals taking place in the shelter house. Columbus Police Officer Dan Dixon agreed the area needs more patrols and advised the residents to call Mayor Michael Coleman’s “Action Line.” “(Your message) goes to the mayor’s office and then down to the police department,” Dixon said. “You’d get quicker response that way than if we (officers) complained about it.” WAC elections WAC Chair Linda Pitts said elections for commission seats will be held May 5. Four seats are open on the commission. Residents need to submit 25 valid signatures by April 20. Pitts is looking for polling places closer to residents to increase visibility and participation.
