Women’s League to offer scholarships

The Violet Township Women’s League is hosting its 13th annual style show luncheon at 11 a.m. April 14 at Berwick Manor.

The event will feature VTWL members sporting the latest fashion from Fashion Bug. The sit-down luncheon also will include a raffle of more than 120 baskets provided from area businesses and VTWL members.

Three local seniors will receive $2,000 scholarships thanks to proceeds from ticket sales from the event. Donations and extra proceeds will go to other local charities.

“We all know how much it costs to go to college,” VTWL member Leigh Burris said. “This scholarship is something that helps them, even if it is just for books.”

Violet Township area seniors can complete the application process either through their school counselors or through the VTWL website at vtwl.com. The application process requires students to write an essay with a focus on community service involvement.

“We’re trying to look for someone who is motivated in their community,” Burris said.

Each month, the organization’s meetings include a theme, such as karaoke month and a sock hop. Donations are taken for causes that are pre-selected.

The group has given to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, as well as local women’s shelters and the dog park. Burris said the group has given to local families in need and finds a charity that is in particular need each month.

“We just pick and donate,” Burris said.

Tickets for the event cost $25 and may be purchased from league members or by calling Leigh Burris at (614) 755-8855. Each attendee will receive three complimentary raffle tickets from the style show committee.
