Dealing with daughters
What is it like for a man to remain sane in a home full of women? Les Somogyi may have the answer. Somogyi, a first time author, is the co-author of “Surviving Daughters: How Five Fathers Managed to Stay Sane in a House Full of Women.” He, along with middle school teacher Todd Stanley, who is a textbook and western novel author, collaborated on the self-published book over two years, while sharing anecdotes and conducting interviews. “After surviving cancer 12 years ago, I felt compelled to chronicle the sweet years I spent raising our daughters,” said Somogyi, the father of two adult daughters. “I approached Todd Stanley with the idea, thinking he was an accomplished author and he would know if there was a market for such a book.” After researching the idea, the pair decided the book would do well. Somogyi, is a local businessman, magazine publisher and Ohio University journalism instructor who has served for 13 years as the Reynoldsburg High School tennis coach. He said working together was fun because Stanley has two daughters as well and they were able to relate through shared experiences. The five fathers mentioned in the title met once a month for a year. “We talked about various phases of raising our daughters from infants to moving out of the house, weddings and grandchildren,” said Somogyi. “We recorded our conversations and following the discussions, we transcribed them and picked the sweetest anecdotes.” According to Somogyi, the book brings back memories for those fathers who have older daughters and prepares younger fathers for “an incredible ride.” He said, in either case, the book will bring smiles and maybe a few tears. “Surviving Daughters: How Five Fathers Managed to Stay Sane Living in a House of Women,” is available on amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com by typing in the keywords surviving daughters.
