Green Lawn recognizes figure from Prohibition
“First Saturday at Green Lawn” takes a step into history for its September program by recognizing a leading figure in the era of Prohibition. The program on Wayne Wheeler, who worked for the Anti-Saloon League in Westerville and helped write the Volstead Act that ushered in Prohibition, coincides with the new Ken Burns documentary “Prohibition” that will be shown on WOSU-TV the first Sunday of October. Speaking on Wheeler, who is buried at Green Lawn Cemetery, 1000 Green Lawn Ave., will be Bill Merriman from the Westerville Historical Society. The program will be held Sept. 3 at 11 a.m. in the Huntington Chapel at Green Lawn Cemetery is free and open to the public. Wheeler and his family are among the 150,000 people buried at Green Lawn since it was established in August 1848. “First Saturday at Green Lawn” is a monthly program at the state’s second largest cemetery that recognizes the achievements of individuals buried there.
