"Bea's Casino Celebration" to bring good vibes to Westside
“Bea’s Casino Celebration” will take place at Westland Flea Market, 4170 W. Broad St., on Aug. 21 from 2-5 p.m.
The event is free and is open to all ages.
There will be music, prizes, a fashion show and featured guests including long time saxophone player Jerry Comons and Hispanic dancers Angel and Selene Cruz.
Buelina Murphy, better known to her community as Bea, is no stranger to the Westside as she has lived in the Franklinton, Hilltop, and Westgate areas for more than 25 years. Murphy is an author, community advocate, local poet and lyricist.
“I love my community,” Murphy said.
Murphy is looking forward to bringing more people out into the community with this upcoming event and said a part of the event will also welcome the presence of the casino to the area.
Although the casino is a topic that generates varying opinions, Murphy said she is excited about the jobs and opportunities the casino will bring to the Westside. She also feels it is important to host different events to reach out to the entire community.
“I am looking forward to the event drawing more people in and providing a positive atmosphere of good, quality fun. Bea is a good person and she sends off good vibes,” said Lora Zinn, manager at the Westland Flea Market.
“I consider that particular area my second home, and the casino site was once General Electric, a former employer. The area is near and dear to my heart,” Murphy said.
During the day, she has a booth set up at the Westland Flea market, selling miscellaneous items.
According to Murphy, the children that come into the flea market often ask questions about “fun” things to do and for these reasons and more, she believes it is important to have events such as the casino celebration on a continuous base.
“The Westside is a great community, we just need to unite and take advantage of the opportunities that we have sometimes,” Murphy said.
