Green Lawn celebrates anniversary with special tours
Green Lawn Cemetery celebrates its 163rd anniversary Aug. 6 with four specialized tours. The tours focus on the monthly “First Saturday at Green Lawn” program and visit the graves of five governors, five Medal of Honor recipients, three presidents of The Ohio State University, and ancestors of four U.S. presidents. These well-known people are among the 150,000 buried at Green Lawn Cemetery. The cemetery, which began with 83 acres in 1848, now covers 360 acres, 80 of which have yet to be developed. These free tours begin at 9 a.m. from the Huntington Chapel. The last tour will leave the Chapel at noon. In addition, photos taken at the cemetery for the 2010 photo contest will be on display through August at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center, 139 W. Main St. For more information on the many projects of the Green Lawn Volunteers call 266-5218 or email sandlot17@juno.com.
