Hilltop Kiwanis "Stuff the Bus" for children in need

As the school year creeps around the corner it is almost time to shop for school supplies, and the Hilltop Kiwanis wish to help those in financial need with their third annual “Stuff the Bus” Aug. 13.
Donations will be accepted at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2930 W. Broad St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
According to Kiwanis member, Vicki Malone, the club made their first attempt at stuffing the bus three years ago and managed to collect enough in donations to disperse supplies amongst Highland Avenue, West Broad, John Burroughs, Binns, and Lindbergh elementary schools.
Last year, the organization received enough donations to not only donate to the six schools, but also to Franklin County Children’s Services, who at that time had 975 children in need.
“We donated half of everything we took in to those children,” Malone said.
Over the past couple years the Hilltop Kiwanis has received help from many local organizations. From the American Legion, to the Sheriff’s Department and the Shalom Zone – the community has come out in numbers to ensure local youths have the materials they need to succeed in school.
“All children need supplies. Many parents are in need. It’s important that our children are equipped with all of the tools to get them off to a great start,” Malone said.
The Hilltop Kiwanis suggest that an organization or individuals would like to donate supplies to children, put a box at their place of job, church, or ask a local business to help collect supplies.
“Then, on Aug. 13 drive up… and we’ll unload your car for you and personally thank each of you for what you’ve done,” Malone said.
